Hello, I am going to replace an engine and system on a manco 150 go kart. I really want something that's pretty neat and has some *** to it. Would anybody care to suggest an engine for this go kart??

Neat and has some *** to it would be a high-end electric motor and battery setup.

I put a predator 301cc in mine and fabbed up electric start using a “stater/alternator” from a Yamaha golf car. The stater and alternator is only $100 NEW! Here’s a video of the go kart running. These predator motors have a lot of power when geared and clutched right.

Tillotson 212 is a far better value than Predator if you intend to exceed governed RPM. Predator motors need upgrades to rod and flywheel to safely spin fast (over $100 more right there) while Tillotson is good to go.

Also check out the Ducar 212 from www.dynocams.com
It’s essentially a competitor to the Tillotson, and they come with a 10K RPM PVL flywheel. I actually wouldn’t be comfortable revving any of these three clones past about 5200 RPM. Although the Ducar has the PVL ‘wheel and Tillys are generally high quality, I wouldn’t trust them without an ARC rod at least. Tillys come with a cast iron flywheel too IIRC. I’d even upgrade the rod in the Ducar just to be safe. It’d be really frustrating to grenade a fine engine.

I appreciate the advice and knowledge. I’ve noticed with my predator it gets to 35mph and won’t go anymore RPM. So if I take the governor off the predator it might grenade it? So in other words once you take the governor off then sky is the limit with rpms?

Nope, then the valve springs are the limit. Stock but ungoverned will get you about 5200 RPM. As long as you totally remove the internal governor guts and don’t run it a valve float for prolonged periods of time, it’s actually probably fine.

Yeah, finest kind maxing out the Predator on stock valve springs, as long as you wish, valve float will prevent excessive rpm's. NOW HEAR THIS: Don't even consider replacing the stock springs with heavier springs unless you first replace the flywheel! PVL racing flywheels are only about $70, and tested at 17K rpm's. If you take your stock cast iron flywheel past the 5200 rpm valve float point with some heavier springs, you run the very real risk that the cast iron may explode. At say 6K rpm, pieces of cast iron can pass through your skull like it was made of cardboard. While you have the flywheel off, the pin the governor gear spins on is exposed. There's your chance to just punch it into the block, instead of fighting for it from the other side. Be sure to remove all those internal parts laying in the block, and the governor arm hanging down from the top. Put 1/4"-20 bolts in the holes.
