Just picked this up for $150 off Craigslist... apparently the ladies son picked it up for a project and never got around to finishing it...

Got home, threw some gas in it (was bone dry from sitting for a year) cranked right up. Not bad for something we thought was gonna need some more work.

This is our first kart, what do we need to look at maintenance wise before we start running this bad boy? We also gotta air up the tires, hopefully they're not useless.

Also has the 6HP Tecumseh engine.

What is TQ?

Also found a couple things that need clarification...Once we put gas in we noticed a leak from this cyclinder under the primer button.

I tightened the nut but it seems to still be leaking, possibly a bad seal under the nut? Is there even a seal there?

This is a picture of the breaks...

Should I change that?

This cord is coming from the engine area, not connected obviously, dunno what it's supposed to connect to.

And this last picture

An on/off switch, but what's it turn off or on? The engine doesn't crank when that button is in the off position, however, when we crank it on, someone has to have their foot on the brakes otherwise it starts to move, would that be an idle issue?

I'm going to try and find some info on this model, it's a Carter Trail Cat I believe, def made by Carter Bros though.

A TQ is a torqe a verter. u need to replace the seal in the carb bowl and the on off switch is just a kill switch and you need to turn the idle adjustment screw down.

Where can I pick up a seal for the carb bowl? Lowes/Home Depot in the lawnmower section or a lawnmower specialty store?

And what about the tires? The back ones are off and not really sitting on the rim... do I need to just try and pump them up and have them readjust themselves getting back on the rim or what?

They're held on by 4 bolts.

You need to try to get them in side then pump them up to set the bead. Correct me if im wrong but permatex will make a good seal for it just drain it and clean it all up and just permatex it.

Ok, maybe i'll just throw it on the trailer again and take it to the gas station to pump up. Our little bike pump wasn't cutting it I guess.

Where can I find the idle adjustment screw on this kind of engine?

the two wires on a plug are probably for either a charging coil or a lighting coil, brakes look good, but check at the bottom of brake band. soapy water and a ratchet strap should aid you nicely in refilling the tires. idle adjust is on the carb body, above the cylinder you were asking about which is the carb bowl. locate your linkage find where it stops on the carb, there should be a screw.

Would this be sold locally by chance? like a lawnmower place? I'm hoping to get to play with this tomorrow.

We gotta go pick up a new valve stem for one of the rear tires and hope it doesn't have a leak somewhere.

This has a lot less work than we thought it would, since it pretty much cranked up after the first try after sitting for a year.

Yea, a lawnmower shop may have it ( i recently had to get that same kit). I had to go to 2 different places but found exactly what i needed. Make sure to bring the carb with you.

So I need to get a new valve stem, and the one I pulled out says TR412, AB 27. Looking at Schucks and AutoZone I don't pull any up. I'd like to buy locally so I can get it same day.

Looking at this website (http://www.ecplaza.net/tradeleads/seller/4332569/tubeless_car_tire_valve.html) it shows similar valve stems. Would those other ones be interchangeable with a TR412, like if I were to use a TR413 like this one from Schucks.

They look pretty similar, i'm hoping this would work...

Hey thats a pretty cool kart

Might as well drain the engine oil and fill-er up with some fresh 30 weight. Take a peak at your air cleaner too. Probably wouldnt hurt to give a little shot of oil to all your steering components, rear axle bearings and chain.

...why did I do that?

take the float bowl to Lowes and get a thin o-ring that is the correct size. Be sure to clean that brass jet out before you reinstall it.

what do you mean by valve stem? the whole thing or just the inside core. a bicycle shop will have the inside core, ask them for a blown inner-tube and take it from that, and get a valve cap that has the valve removal / install tool on the end. Any autoparts store or tire shop will have a complete stem, you just need to know the length. Start with about 8 lbs psi in the tires, see how they feel when riding.

if you can't get the tire to hold air, put a tube in it. a wheel barral tube will work if the correct size, you can get them anywhere.

manuals are here:
