Only 3600 RPM, I doubt it. I regularly hit 3600-4000 RPM with my Honda Clone, and it rides just fine. On higher speed runs, I take it to 4500-5000 when I feel the urge.

I've even been as high as 5200RPM and the only thing that happens is valve float, which sounds like loud ticking followed by backfiring. I'd worry more about the valves at high RPM.

Now if you are building a 6000RPM+ race engine, then sure, get a better and lighter billet flywheel, and you will gain some HP as well.

Its not about weight or timing or power, its about quality/safety. Have you the slighest idea how much stress in on the piece of CHINEESE CAST IRON when its spinning at 5200 RPM?

Not that I wish it on anyone, but just once can anyone IN THIS FORUM show proof that a Clone flywheel grenaded on them? Let's not go into the "I read it somewhere..." or, "..it happened to a buddy of mine...".

Kenny I'm not doubting you- I love your posts, info and advice, but this exploding flywheel thing....? I've had my clone up to 4700 rpm, limited by gearing and breathing and other physics, without hardly even a backfire. In that clone article (elsewhere in the Forum) the guy was winding it up to I believe 5500rpm for tests. As the results showed, the engine (even lightly modded) doesn't make much power over 5000 rpm anyway. I'd think a bigger (but related threat) would be the con rod snapping and causing the flywheel to sheer loose from the force. I wonder if that's how it happens?
Again Kenny, sorry about this- it's not directed at you, but I'd like for someone to back this up.

Ditto...Or any flywheel on utility engines.
Good question Jerry.
Of coarse someone will post a pic they found on some other site with actual circumstances of said explosions unknown.
I'm talking about unmodified engines with governor removed.

There used to be a webpage with pics of a modded pulling lawn tractor that blew a flywheel. SCARY PICS! Unfourtunatly, AOL doesnt do hosting anymore.

I dont wory about most flywheels on stock motors. But this is china we are dealing with, eventually a bad batch will come out with slag in the metal or something along those lines. They cant keep industrial solvents out of baby fourmula, what makes you think they can build a flywheel?

Here is what happens when a indian flywheel engine with defective wheels overrevs. http://www.utterpower.com/flywheel_danger.htm

Kenny,

Not sure if you know this, but no less than 70% of what you buy (and I mean everything) comes from China. Either the parts or just plain all of it. As for the Chinese Clone engines, the reason these engines are so good, is that they use the same build and process plans as the Honda did, that was also made in China. That is why they have these plans, Honda outsourced the parts.

I keep hearing about Chinese Aluminum, Chinese steel, Chinese cast iron. Most all metal comes from the US or Europe, and the Chinese do not get "the discount stuff". If you can fault Chinese manufacturing, it is often the lack of understanding of the product they are re-engineering (dog food), or some corners were cut (lead paint). Those issues come to bite them very fast.

Their FDA equivelent Drug Zar was put to death after he was convicted of taking some money to look the other way. It happened in about a week (trial and hanging). Consequences are dire and quick when the government/country is made to look bad. People used to think Japanese stuff "was crap" as well.

Hate to be a picky Bastard, but almost all of our exported iron goes to China. And thats mostly what they use. Our economy would die without China-we got a lotta iron.
Everybody forgets the great southern land, until there's a war. :ack2:
