after a little grinding work i have made a nice pulley wheel with bearings from one of the track pulleys from the sled. will weld the shaft in place behind the chain. hopefully the shaft will have enough strength and flex to handle when the buggy goes in reverse. otherwise i'll have to revamp the design with a spring, and put one on either side of the chain/sprockets.

the engine just caught on fire as i was welding the tail light bracket on. saw the flames under the carb, down by the oil pump and panicked - started huffing and puffing. luckily it only lasted a couple of seconds, and nothing seems damaged. scared the sh!t outta me! lol. must have been a leaf or something that ignited and quickly burned off. evil.

You have to be so careful when welding around an engine. If I am doing it, I usually put some sort of sheeting over the engine so that no sparks get to it.

I can imagine that you got the fright of your life ......:ack2: :D

so... brake light and headlights mounted, chain tensioner pulley fabricated and welded on, and found a useful purpose for the air box!

True, it scares the crap out of you. I've had it happen to me once or twice; good thing I have an extiguisher nearby

Get a fibreglass blanket
Good for throwing over stuff that is in the path of welding sparks or grinding sparks

finishing up the wiring. motor is bogging down (had power for a minute there...), probably some debris from the new tank. picking up a fuel filter and cleaning the carb again tomorrow.

went to home depot just as they were closing to get the fuel filter and carb cleaner, cuz i was low on cash and had paypal funds (they advertise that you can pay with payal there). went to cash out at the service desk cuz it was closest to my van, and the nice cute customer service girl was clueless about how to do it. tried to bring it up, and it was asking for my paypal pass code (numbers?) and we figured out that i first needed to create a passcode on the web. so she had me get on a computer to sign up for it, and the service was temporarily down, so she gave me the fuel filter and carb cleaner for free! can't beat that!

cleaned the carb, mounted the filter, mounted the clutch guard on (covering the motor with a moving blanket, which of course caught on fire. lol), did some odds and ends and called it a night.

today took the buggy for a quick test spin - lots of power again! still could be a little better, so when i do final re-assembly i will give the carb one more cleaning. probably some debris was still left in the fuel line or fuel pump. will also see if it performs differently with and without the air filters. if the air filters are causing too rich of a fuel/air mixture, then a quick and simple re-jet (go a couple sizes smaller) should take care of that.

waiting for the mud to dry up from this morning's rain, then will make a quick video of the buggy in action in the infamous cop-attracting parking lot across the street. :)

tonight will be dis-assembly night, then getting started on final grinding, then paint time! yay! still gotta whip up some fenders, but that will only take a few hours.

crawled outside in my weakened state, and tried a hunch i had with the carb/air filters. worked like a charm, got tons of consistent power now!

apparently 2 air filters was too much air, compared to the original airbox, which only had one opening to suck in air from. since i had already used the cover of the airbox to cover up the brake cylinder, what i had leftover was the piece that joined the 2 carb openings into one chamber. slapped an air filter on that, took it for a test drive - and holy crap batman, we've got power! :)

on a side-note, in my delerious state i poured coke into my cereal, after i had already poured milk into it. luckily my sense of taste is so far gone that i can't tell the difference. :)

That's the first time I've heard of an engine needing less airflow to run better  But hey, if it works, it works.

Man, you should rest up for a few days; yeah, I know, I can't do it either, but the thing I've noticed is if I do things when I'm sick, I usually have to redo them later coz I messed something up

U probs needed to rejet it after u added the new filters

That should have solved the issue and got u more power

i would have loved to try some different jet sizes, but at $4 a pop per jet and not knowing what size id need... sticking the airbox back on was a low-risk, low-cost gamble. lol.

still sicker than i'd like to be. invited my brother over to ride buggies with me, and while waiting for him to show up i tried to quickly convert my buggy to oil injected (rather than premix). was so light-headed and hacking my lungs out - i gave up before i could hook up the oil pump cable. told my brother to just go on and ride Mike's buggy without me. he was impressed with the handling, said it was a bit loud (the drivetrain with the gear box or something is making some obvious extra noise, not like a bad or broken thing, just obvious and apparent noise - especially when you let off the throttle. like a big tractor winding down or something). he liked the way it handled, said he even did a couple of small jumps. :)

i think my cold might be at it's peak and headed towards recovery. i REALLY REALLY REALLY want to get this buggy done!
