Morning all!

So my son was gifted a Coleman kt196. It ran well the first day they put it together at his grandma's house with his uncle. But after a year or year and a half of sitting, it now runs intermittently. I drained and changed all fluids prior to starting it and it ran for a bit with choke on but as soon as you flip the choke to run or even half choke the sucker died. It's getting too much air I think. Spark plugs is good and gets fire. I adjusted the throttle cable and increased the fuel input, but to little avail. Same issue after motor warms up. I'm not sure what else to do. Any suggestions?

** What is the gap supposed to be on the plug?

Welcome!

If the Coleman was sitting for a year, the likely problem area will be your carb. Old fuel gums up all the little holes in the carb. What I would start with is a good carb clean. Take the carb off and clean with some carb cleaner, making sure to poke all holes out that you can find. Take out the main jet and see if it is blocked. There are several Youtube videos to help you along if you are not so confident about doing it.

Make sure it is cleaned well and all holes are open. You can even use compressed air and blow through all the holes

I wouldn't worry about the plug gap at the moment. If it ran a year ago, the gap shouldn't be your problem

^^That!!:iagree:
You're already half done by draining the old gas, now you need to pull apart the carburetor.
Watch some YouTube videos! There's plenty of them out there.
And don't let gas sit again, otherwise this is what happens........:ack2::eek:

Oh definitely not! Once we got her running again she will be used as often as possible. The kids earn gas by doing chores! Lol. Unfortunately the reason it sat was because my mother in law insisted it stay in her building hahaha. Ok gtg about to rip out the carb!

Awesome, always good to hear of other kids in the addiction. :D
A good rule of thumb for the plug gap is about 0.03", fairly standard.
Any plans for modifications? If so, cosmetic or performance?
I wanna see da beast!

Ok so I cleaned the carb and still nothing. I drained the oil for ****s and grins and it's an ugly brown. Not the honey 5-30 I put in less than 1 hour of operation ago...

Sure why not! It ain't a whole lot to look at at the moment. Sure would like to get better ones, but this will be a good start for my 6 kids and 4 nieces and nephews. I hope to get more carts soon!!

Oil turns brown quickly during use. Nothing to be concerned about and you really can't judge oil by its color.
I drain it yearly or every 25 hours (same difference) for the major machine at the premises (lawn tractor), or more often if it's really dry and dusty outside. But you do have to change it pretty often on these engines because they have no oil filter......

You might have to clean your carburetor again. It's a safe bet that you missed something but you are wise to the possible cause--it's a lean or not-enough-fuel issue when it will only run with the choke applied.

1. Carb mounting bolts might be loose
2. Carb gasket might be faulty
3. Check the fuel tank for rust and other crud in there. It could be that you're contaminating the carb with dirty fuel every time you run the engine

Read this thread: (sadly the video won't work for me--it's now set to private)

Yeah, sounds like you missed something somewhere with the carb.:iagree:
Make sure the pilot jet is clear, the small one to the side of the main jet. Run a piece of wire or a fine drill bit through there with your hands.
And yes, brown oil is not a big deal. Mine is usually pitch black whenever I change it, but that just means the detergents and cleaning agents in the oil are doing their jobs! Look out for metal shavings though, those can indicate a catastrophic failure in process.

I have similar problems with my go kart after it has not been started for a while if you can get it to fire try and get some gas flowing as soon as you can after the fire and if you do it it might start. Just an idea. As well I agree with all said above. These guys have awesome advice
