Accurately measure from the tip of one tooth to the next:
- if it measures 3/8", most likely #35 chain
- if it measures 1/2", most likely #40/41 chain
- if it measures 5/8", most likely #520/530 chain

Likewise, measure the centre to centre distance between the pins in the chain

And if you also measure the roller diameter and width (inside) of the chain you can precisely identify the chain number..

Code:
Chain Number	Pitch	Roller* Width*
#35 3/8	.200	3/16
#40 (#425)	1/2	.312	5/16
#41 1/2	.306	1/4
#410 (#43)	1/2	.306	1/8
#415 (#42)	1/2	.306	3/16
#420 1/2	.306	1/4
#425 (#40)	1/2	.312	5/16
#428 1/2	.335	5/16
#520 5/8	.400	1/4
#525 5/8	.400	5/16
#530 (50)	5/8	.400	3/8

*Roller Diameter
*Width between inner plates

I think I could add pin diameters, tensile strength and maybe plate thicknesses as well...
but I'm not sure it'd reduce confusion :roflol:

But you're right.. I should have removed the H values (since they're identical except for the plate thickness and or pin diameters ;)
Done!

Are 40/41 chains/sprockets interchangeable? I need to figure out what size chain will fit a sprocket I have. I've figured out that it's either a 40 or 41 sprocket. How do I figure out which one it is? (I only have the sprocket)

#40 is wider and will fit either....IIRC...#41 is 1/4" and #40 is 5/16".....

At any rate.....sprockets are always designated as 40/41 ....because a #40 chain will work on either....

I just figured it out. Thanks for the help...btw whats the difference between 41 chain and 420 chain?

What's the difference between a straight six and an inline six? IDK....Look the same to me.....?:surrender:

tensile strength

#41 is only good for ~2000lbs

and 420 up to 3700 (the strength of a #40 at the size of a #41 ;))
(caused by #40 pins... if you want to know; .156" in diameter instead of the .141" the #41 uses)
