So we finally took the kart out for it's virgin run... it went well for being on pavement with knobby tires. My concern right now is the brakes.

It seems they need a little tightening, and i'm not sure if these kinds of brakes are supposed to have pads or what, but just two times around the apt complex hitting the brakes here and there they started to smoke.

These are the kinds of brakes it's got...

a

Does the brake need replacing? If so, where can I buy these replacements.

Thanks =)

Wasn't sure if the smoking from the brakes would be an issue... we did DW-40 a lot of the components since it had been sitting for a year w/out use.

Found a couple links that carry those similar brake bands, just gotta figure out what size it is.

What is the best brakeing system for an off-road/dirt kart?

the best hydrolic disk brakes from a car or something. but some times there to good and you tap the pedal like my freinds kart and it instantly STOPS.

if wd40 got inside the band that would be 1 reason it would smoke because the friction would heat it up

...why did I do that?

I noticed bluing on the drum where the cotter pin is. Look and see if anything is scraping the drum. Do the brakes squeak as well?

Band brakes were designed as parking brakes for garden tractors and that is about all
they are good for. I would consider going to a disk set up

Something is creating a LOT of heat. Steel doesn't turn that shade of blue/purple unless it's heated.
I don't see any scoring, and it looks glazed so there's nothing lodged in there between the band and drum.

I would say take the band off, lift the cart, run the engine at mid speed and take some coarse sand paper and roughen up the drums surface while its spinning. Put the sand paper on a block of wood so you don't get caught in the chain.

Band brakes aren't that bad. I've got a 4" on a yerf dog with an 11hp engine and max it at close to 35mph and I stop in a good short distance.
