Hello,

Here's my DIYGK 2016 Build off entry. I started it a while back in my other thread known as "kart rods" but it is far from complete.

...like, so far from complete.

Like my other creations, it's a go kart with a theme... with 6 wheels. When done, it should appear like these concept photos... and, well... like a train.

I call it "LOCO." The six wheel configuration is inspired by the Tyrell P34 race car (the Elf Car). It will carry the additional label of No. 34 in salute to the wonderful creation it was for its time.

It is made with 3 frames. The front and middle frame(s) are similar Manco one-seater frames, and the rear portion came from another unknown fun kart. It has twin motor mounts as this thing is 7 feet long and a little on the heavy side. The wheels are 4" manco in the front and 6" manco's in the rear. The 4 wheel steering is functional and tacked in place, as are the frames. I believe it meets the criteria of being less than 50% done.

The plan: To create an artistic as well as functional ride that's fast. I will use the traditional old school hot rod building techniques. Meaning: make do with whatever I can find to make this run, and spend very little on NEW parts to build it. It will have sharp edges and be otherwise, dangerous to your average bubble-wrapped child born any time in the last 20 years. It will also have very few matching bolts and nuts while sporting parts from very unconventional applications. We'll wing it, I'm an artist.

So, my entry... a sort-of rolling, tubeless, tireless, missing a lot... pile of parts... and "the sign."

Yea yea... I deserved that. Art can't be rushed... but I've had a while to think about this one. It's just a scavenger hunt now for a few, um... Items?

:wai: Nice!!! A 4-2-0 locomotive (4 pilot/steering wheels, 2 drivers, but no trailers on the back [behind the drivers on the engine frame]). And before anyone asks/ says anything, the wheels on any separate tender/ trailer aren't counted because they're, well, trailing the engine..... :thumbsup: :cheers2:

Spelling is correct.. pronounciational remarks seem to be accurate as well....

so even if I wanted to, I couldn't :D

And frankly.. I picked my favourite build this year (I thought...)
the day you entered.. I love Bierkisten.

Then came a few more builds I really think I will enjoy very much.
And now... it's no secret that I truly like what Kelly is doing to and with karts...
So this year will be a terrific contest and I cannot wait to see them by the end of this year...
(and here's where my quote fit's in as nicely.. this year's contest is going be fun to watch!)

that being said...
even if there was something slightly wrong with his sign, I think I would still have accepted it as an entry.
Just because I can now :D

Update:

Ok, this project will take some doing. So, outside we go to make sense of what is supposed to happen.

We'll number things to make it easy.

Picture 1: Just sitting things in place. One might wonder why the rear set of front wheels have springs. Really, the springs don't do anything although the original intent was for some kind of weird suspension by Manco but since we're using it here, we'll use it to adjust the height of the rear front set to ensure proper ground contact.

When you sit in it, the frame will ultimately flex a bit due to the weight of this beast (and my skinny 160LB self) so this will ensure all 6 wheels are in contact by allowing some adjustments here. Honestly, I could have put the spring front end up front but that looked strange to me and would have wrecked the rest of the better frame that's the middle portion.

Picture 2: Checking clearance on engine #2. The motor mount will have to be moved left to allow wheel clearance. No need to worry about chain clearance here, it's right down the middle of the ride.

Picture 3: Setting chain on top of things to check clearance on the left side, engine #1. There is about 1/2 inch to play with left & right so we're good there. Total length from top of clutch to contact with a sprocket is about 6".

Picture 4: Top picture of engine #1, clutch & chain alignment. It's close but it will work. On this side of the ride, the clutch is 1" away from the wheel if my measurements are correct. This side, when done will stick out of the train cab. The clutch, chain & such should be on the outside of the ride. That's the plan anyway.

Picture 5: Just a picture from a certain angle. Visualizing the cab in my head covering the engines vs height needed to run them and have ventilation.

Picture 6: Not used.

Picture 7: A side shot as I had a beer.

Picture 8: A final picture of all the stuff as I had another beer.

Initial motors to be used are:
A. Honda GX200, once was a racing engine used in the stock 4cycle classes. Mods: Only governer has been removed.
B. Harbor Freight Greyhound. It was one of the GOOD ones. Same mods, only governer removed. Was used in a test once to prove the engine could be raced in the Honda class and held its own. Took 4th that day in a class of 12.

Both engines hit 5000 RPM. Honda will do 5100. Honda GX 200's springs and the early greyhounds had killer valve springs in them and don't float prior to 5k typically. Makes me wonder why anyone keeps messing with all the mods to a predator when a stock GX200 is basically bullet proof from the get go.

A couple things just complicate things and make your brain hurt:devil2:
1. A train usually can do a Push or Pull thing right.
Therefore you need to mount one engine one way and one the other.
2.What do you have against the number 6? Must be a Utah thing like buildings with no 13th Floor.:roflol:

But... um... OUCH! (yea, that's painful) If I mounted one the other way, I'm gonna need like 80 jackshafts to get the chain going the right way and a big huge disc or something to mount them on. I'm sure some moron will try this some day.

Tisk tisk.. secret handshake pal... I can't tell you about #6 unless you show you're one of us!

Wait? ??You mean there's no 13th floor? Maybe that's why I always wind up spending the night in the elevator....then again....I saved 10% on the room....and usually wind up spending the night there anyway!
