hey guys, today I pick up a "1960 concessions kart"at least, that is what the guy that sold it to me said. he said he bought it from his dad who bought it from the dells. so anyway I paid 100$ for it and I can say it was a concessions kart looking at the amount of dents. I will post pics tomorrow. it also came whit the original Carlisle tires 3 of which held air. and it came with 4 brand new Carlisle tires and tubes.

so this kart came with a running 5hp Tecumseh flat head engine, and I got the engine running but it makes a loud knocking sound when it is running. I originally thought it had a rod knock but I took it apart and checked it and there was no up and down play. well I was in there I took out the guv. put it all back together thought it was maybe the valves. it needed a new head gasket so I decided to make an aluminium one out of a pop can put it back together again. the knock was louder:huh: so what do you think it is?

Probably isn't running proper clearance to the head at the top of the piston. If its knocking I'd about guarantee it will show some sort of mark internally that will show where its touching, think about how beating on a piece of metal with a ball peen hammer will mark the surface, same concept.

actually I am pretty sure it is a rod knock. when i took of the crank case cover it had some scoring. I went back and noticed that it knocked even when the valves were open or closed. so I think i will just run it until it blows. what do you think. I just got hope full. will it last longer if I use thicker or thinner oil?

I dunno can you? Lol. If you can find one that's the exact perfect size and a quality high speed bearing I don't see why not but why do you want to replace it? Is it worn out?

What I described is in essence a rod knock, rod holds piston, piston could be slapping the head = knocking. If you want to blow it up, drain the oil and blast as far as you can full throttle, put a little style to it.

Remember that talk we had about asking something and immediately discounting any answer you get, you're slipping....

sorry.
i took of the cylinder head to check because I thought my spark pug was to long it was fine top of the piston was perfect. the reason I thought it was snot a rod knock in the first place is it took off the crank case and juggled the con rod on the crank and it did not move = no rod knock. I did not take the rod apart to check for scoring. I think I should have.
