Hello,

We bought a used go kart for our son this spring, and I now find my self youtubing and learning way too much about these engines. LOL

Newest issue, when idling (has to be prolonged to get it to do this) the RPMS will begin to rise and the kart will begin to slowly inch forward on its own. It will also do this pretty consistently after driving it around the back yard.

Next issue, is the last two times he has been riding i have noticed smoke and a burning smell coming from the engine area after he has been riding for a while.

So after googling my little heart out, I have concluded almost nothing but more questions.

I would love to provide more information about the engine, but we received no manual, and I cant really find anything with the model # I found on it. Its is a 125cc Shineray, or at least that is what the cover says. I have found similar looking engines when googling that or 125cc Lifan.

Thanks any one for any help!

Here are some pictures of the engine itself. I might have found a manual for the go kart, just based on looks of it, but it doesn't really give me good specs for the engine.

the shinerays are rather true copies of the Lifan even following the lifan model codes for all I know,

so you should find a stamped model number on the engines crankcase
1P54FMI or alike
with that you can essentially refer to the Lifan specs for that same engine model.

can't tell for sure but if you got auto-choke then check that
(by disabling it when the engine is warmed up)
chances are it's faulty and kicks back in when hot.
smoke and burning smell might be for the same reason
IF that smoke is white and the smells like gasoline that is.

if it's not (blue and smells like oil) it's a leak (piston rings maybe)
hard to tell from here.

Good maintenance is always a good idea,
change the oil, check all connections wires and linkages to run smooth and freely to
snap back into position when released;
clean the engine and add light oil linkages, pivots and moving parts in general.
fresh or refreshed air filter
and maybe a fresh fuel filter too
just what you'd normally do to take care of an engine.

while doing that most of the times you will recognize a part that looks to "not be okay"
and more often than not it's part of a (maybe upcoming) problem.

Thank you so much, the lifan information helps a ton, yes I was able to previously find the 1P54FMI on the engine, but cross referencing with Shineray was showing no results, going off Lifan will help a ton. I am going to start with just changing out the carb. Since its quick, easy, and cheap and see what that does. At least that way if it doesn't correct the issue, it at least begins to isolate it with out a lot of effort.

um sid don't you mean that black smoke means that the engine is running rich?

So quick update, I got a new carb for it today and it is starting better, but I am still getting the smoke from the engine. Definitely smells like oil, but it is not black. The engine it self is smoking, not coming from any exhaust out lets. It also sounds like the clutch is slipping. I can try and adjust the idle as I have it pretty turned down right now. The carb works for now, but the cable choke arrived broken on it and the fuel filter leaks so I requested a replacement.

while I had it in the garage I went ahead and changed the oil and this time put MC oil in it instead of car oil.

Not sure if this extra information helps but I am hoping my neighbor can take a look at it soon and help guide me into the next direction as pistons rings are not something I know anything about. However I am pretty handy and can figure almost anything out in time.

He hasn’t been here in over a year. Sorry, but start you’re own thread and maybe we can help you through some of them.
