Okay so I just picked up a Carter Talon gy6 buggy and am having the most ridiculous time finding the proper motor for it. I have rear brake calipers, but every single motor I find has drum brakes on it and a second mounting hole in the back, unlike the old stock motor that was in it. Anyone have any idea where I can find the correct motor? I need a long case gy6 150cc Engine along with the carb and all the stuff that comes with it. My blown motor does not have the little spring thing on the back of it. Here are a couple pictures of what the areas that are slightly different look like-

Can you rebuild the original engine? Also, the brakes have nothing to do with the engine. More pics needed.

Engine

The old engine is missing a bunch of pieces because the previous owner had taken it to somebody to have it repaired, but the mechanic became very ill with cancer and he was only able to get some of the parts back. My biggest concern is with the mounting bolts in the back and if I can just ignore the drum brakes on the newer engines and just use my brake calipers thatre already hooked up? I know I could reweld mounting points, but I’m not too sure if I can make it work because of the braking system. I think I would much rather get a new engine at this point because I have no manual, I don’t know what I’m missing, and I’m unfamiliar with these engines.

WOW... buddy did a number on it... what was originally the problem on the motor in the first place?...

I see
no carb
no exhaust
no valve rockers
no valve cover....

Youll most likely need a whole new engine... They are Chinese, so matching will be tricky... there are replacements out there... However the biggest thing will be...

How much do you want to spend on it to make it run???

Yes, he was only able to find so many parts for it in the shop but the motor does look like ****, so I’m alright just keeping it for parts and looking for a new motor. I really don’t want to spend more than 250-300 on a motor. I can find the gy6 150 motors anywhere from 220-600. I can find a gy6 150cc long case without reverse for $245 all over eBay but it has the drum brake setup on it and that is all that concerns me. Could I just not hook up the drum brakes and continue to use the brake calipers? Just pretend the drums aren’t there? Like would this fit mine? https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01M...50cc+motor&dpPl=1&dpID=51zYds362lL&ref=plSrch

I am talking about the drum brakes on the spindle coming out of the gear box. Mine does not have this, as it is clearly meant for disc brakes.... hence why my question is could I just remove the drum brakes and use an engine like this?

Ahh I see...
I'm going to say ya... But as long as the shaft is the same to mount the sprocket...
Before you buy... Make sure you measure your motor and ask if it compares to yours as for mounting and the like...

Does anybody else have any thoughts? I have measured the distance from the spindle to the engine case (like you’re supposed to to know if you need a short/long case- mine is 11.25 inches which is long).

Okay so I have figured out the two mounting bolts in the back are irrelevant for me because my axle has a swing mount that bolts directly to the swing mount on the gear spindle. I have not seen a single other engine like this- do they exist...?

hmmm.... good question....
I reckon off hand... that looks like a tensioning method for the drive chain..... It looks necessary for it to be the same way... as how with the new motor are you to do the same without it....

Does that shaft come off of the "drive spindle" ?....

Once again I'm not sure what you mean about a swing mount???

What I'm referring to is in this pic, the driving shaft with the tensioning bearing, can that be removed from the motor????...
Your going to need this for the next motor...

What you're running into is what happens when a company goes out of business. Carter has been shut down for some time and parts are scarce if available at all. American Sportworks took over Manco Powersports, there are parts still available for Manco karts but they're slowly going away. My suggestion would be to fabricate something in the rear swingarm to adapt a later model GY6 powertrain even though that could be pretty involved. Consider cutting your losses and look for a later model Manco kart or an ASW product.

Thanks

Does this look like a possible option?

You'll need an engine with an external reverse transmission or one that only has F and R, no neutral.

Thanks

So I actually spent about an hour or two today taking the whole engine apart to remove the old drive shaft, like you suggested. I believe that if I could find a newer style engine with the exact same width shaft, I’d be able to just reuse my old shaft with the mount on it. Does anyone know if it is a pretty standard size or do I have to contact sellers to see if I can get them to measure the width/length of their shafts? Here are a few pictures of it out of the engine.
