hello fellow followers...

I thought I might join this year just for the heck of it...

having that ugly & long Manco 715 ... why not shoot for the stars? :D

I waited a few more days for even more parts to arrive, to at least have a nice pile of parts,
now I still don't...
it'll take another week until the next batch arrives I assume;
so let's just start anyways.

smallest parts pile ever:

oh and the engine (you know what a clone looks like don't you?)

I like the sign more than your kart (for now)! If you put the same attention to detail in your kart, its going to be awesome!

hehe attention to detail .. I doubt it, but I'll try ;)
I'll try with nothing but doodles and nearly no exact measurements

At least that's the plan;
let's see where I end up with that :D

:smiley_omg: you been hacking my tablet? I was toying with the idea of doing a make over with my 715...... :lolgoku: what do you have in mind for a build on this longer than church service on a hot day chassis? I only see one way to go with it...but if it's the same thing you're thinking, I'll stick to my original plan and maybe do a trike.....:popcorn:

Hehe...
For now this is all (not too) hidden clues :D

Okay let's start at the beginning..
I had exactly no idea where I wanted to go with the kart,
so I browsed my container of mediocre odds and found one of those red light 'scanners', you know the walking light thingy.

So I thought maybe some K.I.T.T -alike kart would be nice...
shopping time :D
but being at the hardwarestore I found that white rattle cans are much cheaper than black ones
(well, black wasn't available from that no name brand)
So I got white... *shrugs* and tossed the Knight Rider idea.

Back home I reopened said container and found a white Corgi Toy .. white...
yeah some 'important' question can be really easy to answer in the end ;)

Diecast toy ...
like hotwheels... but with wings...
hotwings ... a bit of passwordisation...
hotwinged... done! :D

Funny thing: the TV show was also by Glen A Larson,
and as bad as Knight Rider :) (loved it as a child!)

And a few doodles later the plan was set.
and the main parts have been ordered ;)

:surrender: Alex, you artistic types never cease to amaze me... Back before CAD took over the world, I was a pretty fair draftsman; I could never produce a "Doodle" that could ever come close to the things that just seem to fall off the pencil's of yourself and Kelly (as well as probably at least several others here).

I guess I'm just going to have to stick with what I know how to do (although, machining propellers for some pretty high end world renowned Yacht builders can be pretty interesting too...)....

Well I will have to read the rules and see if my idea will pass as a "build". My idea was no where in that neighborhood, so I guess I will see about makin my vision a reality.... :stir:

Well Pat...

My ovals are nowhere near ideal, my straights are never sraight and to ogive nose cone.. is just plain awful...
The magic is: I don't mind :D
As long as the proportions are about right I'm okay with it ;)

If you think of it as drafting without a ruler, you'll see that it's actually pretty easy to do.
just spend a minute a day doodling and you'll end up with convincing doodles in about a month ;)

I know you could do the same if you'd try a few times;
but thank you :D

airplane... pfft
SPACESHIP!

And so it begins...
Ordered some air ducts..
2x 1m 150mm
1x 1m 125mm
1x 0.5m 100mm
and adaptors
2x 150-125
2x 125-100
hotwinged_03.jpg

cut the two smaller pipes in half and here's the first RL mock up of the rockets...
hotwinged_04.jpg
all unglued, nothings straightened,
the nose cones are missing (will have to make my own I'm afraid)
But you should get the idea ;)

Also I took my rear wheels and startet the general restoration of the base kart
The B4
before_cleaning.jpg
And after the first pass with nothing but hot water and coarse steel wool:
cleaning_first_pass.jpg
it'll take a while untill they're ready to be painted..
but that alone helped alot :D

Unfortunately I'm missing the left spacer, so I will have to make one.
missing_spacer.jpgmissing_spacer2.jpg
But that's going to be a different days task ;)

'sid

PS please keep your fingers crossed,
I might have found a complete Manco rear wheel assembly in germany that I can get.
I'll know tomorrow :D

Sooo

after a few more cleaning passes with fine steel wool, old toothbrushes and loads of soap..
I finally applied some white colour..
here's the first layer drying ;)
whitening_01.jpg

And while waiting to apply the second I went to a florist and got me some turbines for my rockets
hotwinged_05.jpg
one set stacked:
hotwinged_06.jpg

No, not convinced, so I threw out the bigger plate and got me two more smaller pots.
It started to rain.. of course!
(because my day wasn't bad enough with the broken wheel half :censored:)

Anyways, after removing the collar
hotwinged_07.jpg
I could make the rear end a fair bit longer:
hotwinged_08.jpg

Yup, much better now...

'sid

[EDIT]
Well, I quickly made a nose cone..
And what should I say.. the rockets might be a bit oversized ;)

I removed one stage to have a comparison..
hotwinged_09.jpg

let's see..
the cone is ~50cm
the third stage 25cm (~20 visible)
each coupler is maybe 2-3cm
the second stage is 50cm again
and the first one 100cm
the thruster is roughly 35cm

That's 240-260 cm (with or without third stage) that's about 7.8-8.5 feet...

Maybe I do need more exact measurements ;)
Ah well...

to be continued....

Getting that "baked on" finish in the beaming Texas sun...... If you look closely, you see the reflection of the rod in the center......
