Default 1/2 inch steel axle?

I am modifying a riding lawn mower to a kart drive line. I have a 1/2 hardened steel rod and all the peices to mount it to the frame and wheels. Would 1/2 be thick enough?

1" minimum would be industry standard.

1wd might be alright but I would rather go to 1" anyways.

My 1 wheel drive kart uses 5/8" axle on drive wheel. I would not want to go smaller than that.

They sell axles keyway cut and turned down/threaded on ends to hold the hubs on.

I hope you dont mind, but im hijacking my thread back because i had an idea and wanted opinions. Im a redneck,so be prepared...i have a 1 inch axle (steel rod), 2-4pushmower tires with bearings, 2 pneumatic tires from harbor freight, 6 inch pulley, 2 inch pulley, and a few belts...mount the mower wheels to the frame and use them for their bearings with holes drilled on the axle for cotter pins to keep from sliding; Mount the big pulley on one of the tires using the bolts from the rims(longer ones); use a welded single wheel drive or use [I]gokartmozarts[I] idea with tractor keys. What do ya think? Ill make a drawing if needed...Thanks...
