so i have 2 nice motors 5hp and 8hp with 1" shafts,
and another one 5hp with a tapered shaft. i am tossing up what to do with the 1"..... A: remove and have machined to 3/4 B: buy pulley clutches and use a jackshaft with pulley,(modified jackshaft plate for adjusting belt). C: drop 100 bucks on a 1" clutch. the tapered one either gets crank machined or just replaced whats your opinions |

You could use the $79 Comet 1"-bore/CS400-series clutches with 5 & 8hp engines:
http://www.mfgsupply.com/gomini/gomi...metscs400.html I've seen this exact same clutch model selling for anywhere between $30-$200 on ebay. There pretty decent clutches for up to 8hp, only bummer is they're outboard-only, and only slide on your PTO about 1-1/2". So chain alignment is sometimes an Issue...

Machine shop work is pricey unless you have personal access. Otherwise, just buy a 1" clutch.

If you had access to a lathe and mill, you could do all three cranks in half a day.
If not the 1" clutch route sounds easiest, or crank replacement and sell the 1" cranks.

i wonder why 1 inch clutches are so expensive. if its rated to 8hp then thats about the same as your average 30 dollar max torque

Many 1" clutches are rated to 13-20hp, some can handle 50hp with a 4:1 ratio/11" rear tires. All 1" bore clutches are larger diamiter and simply cost more to make than most of the lower-cost 3/4" models. There's some 3/4" clutch models for racing that cost well over $200.
