On another forum I post on.
http://www.pilotodyssey.com/PO/viewt...hp?f=2&t=10132 This guy is building his home out of containers. All 60 year old wood as well. Not sure what it will look like when done. But I think it's going to be really nice. the wood is spotted gum, select, recycled from an old picture theatre, the wood is over 60 yr old and was cut by an old mate of mine. Amagine having this set up but without the upper units? Just the two and the roof on top. You would have a huge bay to drive into and stay dry. And have tools and storage on both sides. Containers are like $600 each (i think) The beams would cost some good money. But still way cheaper than building a shop. I wonder what the city would think if you tried to build this for say commercial building? When I buy my next house out of the city. You can bet you arse I will build one of these. That is if the place does not already have a shop. Not the upper story just the bottom. Maybe one in back. I would even build huge carports on each side.

Looks like it now yah. But I think when he is done you will not be able to tell what it is? From the wood work he is doing anyway. Notice the trim? I think it's going to shock many people when done. I think this is in Aussy so maybe it will be open air. He did say he was putting a ceiling in it though.
the eves will get bird netting, the front and back we will use clear plastic drop downs, later we will have to put a ceiling in But I would be happy just how it is now. Just lower the roof.

Very cool, I've researched these used container buildings in the past but have never found someone actually building one, just graphics from companies looking to sell the idea.
Definitely something I'm interested in when I get the opportunity to build my own home. Planning to find some space in the country or outskirts of town to do my own thing as well. A cool pic I found:

there is a company in west aus that uses comtainers in two lines then puts a big tarp dome over the top
we use one as our welder workshop the ones iv acctually see in use are far longer of coause the princible means can go as long as u want they look temporary but they have a 25 year life expectancy which is similar to tin sheds they are new so the first ones are only 10-15 years old also u park the machines down the middle then the sea containers themselfs are the workshop and storage areas the workshop is only 8 ft wide but its 200ft long they probs wouldnt like snow but if it even snowed a little here it would probly signify the end of the world we are looking at useing one

There's a company in Mexico that's converting these into affordable homes. Saw it on tv a few months back. I think it would be pretty cool! It would make an awesome shop but would definitely need an A/C system here in AZ lol.

I've been wanting a house like this for over a year now. haha, I first saw one in Tron Legacy, Its awesome. Ill try and find a pic. And they used containers over in New Zealand for the retail shops after the earthquake last year, looks real good too. Ill try and get some pics of it.
EDIT: Found them The Tron one is a bit scruffy, but I love it....Sorry if you noticed the mess of different photo sizes...Should be good now |
