Default Christmas light quasi emergency

My old lady is super proud of her laser light display, so of course my dad accidentally ran over the extension cord destroying my cord and her power supply. I can mend my cord. How about this power supply-can I just attach one of my 12V power supplies to it?

Yup!

Use an old wall wart xformer. Just make sure it has more power supply than that.
500ma and 6w isn't that much really.

Well make sure the lights have a rectifying circuit built in
(seems like they have since I can't spot diodes on that powersupply)
but CHECK!

then as long as the plug fits you'll be fine (500mW or more.. it shouldn't even mater if it's a recitified 2Amp powersupply as long as the voltage fits)

ALSO: fix the one you have...
the transformer itself hardly has any damage, it's the caps and PCB that are gone..
you can fix that with two new caps and a soldering iron and maybe some JB weld to stiffen the PCB. (you could even make a new one )
resistors look fine...
so that's a great opportunity to improve the desoldering/resoldering skills

ha ha! great discussion. I used a 12V power supply I had laying around, I had to cut and solder the cables, and since it's outdoors I modified a plastic Folgers coffee jar to hold it all and keep it dry, works well

as for me soldering circuit boards I probably need a finer soldering iron, and a solder pump, and I dont have much experience with PCBs

To be honest, I recommend that you don't do it.

worst book ever!
Anyways, welcome

Also: much better song on a gokart surely is "Magic carpet ride"
Still... I can't but agree with WTR...

where's the point of a DIY-whatever forum where people suggest "do not fix"
whatever it is that is to be fixed?

I do agree that you shouldn't run any improperly repaired electric appliance.
NEVER!
But replacing a broken powersupply is imho a good idea
and using the broken one as a testplatform to improve on the electronic soldering skillset
isn't a bad thing either...

Soo, IDK something escapes me, please explain!

Riding a bike in the rain must be one of the worst experiences you can have. I feel for you
