It should be a 41 chain.

IIRC besides being lighter duty, #41 chain is a little bit narrower.
...so, #40 chain should work on both #40 & #41 sprockets
...but, #41 chain may be too narrow to be used on a #40 sprocket.

Here are the actual specs:

Chain Size #40-1 Pitch 0.500" Roller Width 0.312" Roller Diameter 0.312" Overall Width 0.642" Plate Height 0.475" Plate Thickness 0.058" Pin Diameter 0.156" Ultimate Strength 3,970 LBS Weight per foot 0.42 LBS

Chain Size #41-1 Pitch 0.500" Roller Width 0.250" Roller Diameter 0.306" Overall Width 0.522" Plate Height 0.390" Plate Thickness 0.050" Pin Diameter 0.141" Ultimate Strength 2,760 LBS Weight per foot 0.28 LBS

Here is a nice chart with lots of info on chain size

well i bought a sprocket (2 1/8 diameter) for the jack shaft with a 1/2" pitch, three teeth of the sprocket fit in the chain but the teeth outside of that where too far for the chain
here are my chain stats
pitch 1/2"
roller diameter 5/16
roller width 1/4"
pin diameter - between 1/8 and 3/16
link plate height - 7/16"
connecting width - 9/16"
not measured with caliper,
would you say i have a #41?

thanks
