Well, I don't know for sure, but as far as I know,
ALL U.S. beers meet the german standards.
Nothing but water, yeast, hop and malt (barley or wheat)
as long as nothing but those ingredients are being used our standards are met.

it's all about ratio...
bavarians for example like their beer a little bit on the chewy side (more yeast than water I think )
I like it more liquid, but with more hop than malt (bitter note.. a pilsener so to say).
Others do not like character at all, and they end up with very little of anything but water and the result is well.. a Miller Genuine Draft

'S all about preferences

I'm glad to hear that; I trend to the the Pilsner end of the spectrum myself; and having friends and relatives who have dabbled with home brewing, I'm really wary about dark, heavy stuff. The one time I asked an actual brewer at one of the micro's we have around here(Grand Rapids, Michigan; Beer City, USA, 2013) about why all the beginners just make the dark, heavy stuff, he said it was because making a Pilsner type was a lot harder to get right.....

So it's actually true!?!???

What gets me isn't the results; it's the fact that the contest was held at all....(I mean, some actually did the taste test????)
