Default 10 foot mech build

First post, figured I'd share my project. It's pretty much an extremely lifted go-cart with arms. Unfortunately I was so excited about building it I didn't stop much for pictures.

Wood isn't exactly the best material, but it proved the concept is sound right?

Wouldn't exactly call it a go kart but looks awesome. What is your power source, what kind of wheels are you using, and how much does it weigh? We are going to have a lot of questions for you. Great job, if it isn't a bit off topic

Well maybe, it got wheels, it is powered by an industrial engine and small wheels. Well that isn't lifted, that is just a double decker to kart with no bottom seat

I give a bit of a blurb about it in the video, but I'll explain it in detail if you cant watch the vid

I cheated a bit: it's bolted onto a snowblower. I threw a rod on the original engine last winter so I bought the cheapest predator from harbor Freight (it says not to use it for vehicles but I void warranties!).

I don't have any controls rigged to the cockpit except for a bit of webbing running to the traction drive engage lever. Eventually I'll be kitting out the entire cockpit with throttle control (foot pedal), gear selection, brakes (pedal), and a few Raspberri Pi camera systems to monitor gas (camera over a gascap gauge) and a camera to see behind me when backing up. The main vision system is ambitious: LCD touch screen, camera with laptop & windows installed on a USB all on a carriage that moves with pilot head movements. Electronics will be powered by some wal-mart battery back-ups (motor noise will drown out the annoying beeping). Some lighting in the hammerhead and a NERF gun in the arm might be fun. Plan to start a giant robot lazer tag facility or something.

Wheels are $7 Harbor freight special. Exact weight of the mech is unknown, but I can lift up the front feets to adjust the tire nuts with my own mooscles. Then again I lift up the back end of the lawn tractor if I need to move it quickly so that's not much to go by.

Plan to do some more work on it after I get some things for Halloween finished. Like making the noodle arms thicker:

Replace these arms

With these (which are currently sitting in a back shed)

Steering is a pain but some bungees might help with that. I hope use my tax rebate to make it in PVC so its lighter. This spring do some promotion stuff by driving in local parades n' stuff. Plan on doing some promo with a not-so-go-cart mech (pretty much a giant puppet) in the upcoming weeks to get word out an maybe some funding/news coverage.

Not so much wood anymore, now it's even moreso PVC, and about 50% lighter!

Awesome do you think a pvc one with like a card board body would be light enough to not need wheels or electronics

It was a good reason to necropost, I hope

Planning for a legit giant robot fight. Filming a sort of build series so folks can get an idea how to build their own. Already got a guy in the next town over who wants to build one and fight me.

The electronics are just for a cool camera system. You could just have a window instead of all the electronics.

Don't know how you'd go without wheels (bipedal walking is hard!), but cardboard would end up melting in the rain so it would be hard to store!

You definitely have to post a vid of the fight when it happens

A local contacted me a while ago, interested in building one himself. Now that it is almost completed I might see if he wants to meet up to talk about building his.

Does that thing have anything that "amplifies" the force of the punch? If not, I'd imagine it'd make a great workout machine, but ineffective at smashing things.
Maybe some steel fists....
Can you imagine, pulling up to a dark intersection in the middle of the night, and then that thing goes across???!!!

It's entirely mechanical, so there is no "amplification" per se, but since it is about 2x as long as a human arm the pilots motion is sped up 2x... and those are inflatable sockem boppers for fists so it is a little squishy...

I'm currently researching some stuff for a kickstarter to fund the second mech/write a2 volume book telling folks how to build their own.
