It is used to change the plane of drive, typically with a motor to have a right side drive. on mine this is what I did. In this pic the guard wasn't fully atached yet.

In addition-

They are often used to create a gear reduction ratio that would be impossible or impractical without. For example, a 10:1 ratio can be reached with a 10T engine sprocket and a 100T axle sprocket. But that axle sprocket would be huge! The tire wouldn't touch the ground because of it. So- jackshaft. 10T on the engine and 20T on the "in" side of the jackshaft. Then a 10T on the "out" side of the jackshaft to a 50T on the axle. Same overall ratio, axle sprocket is half the size.

Jackshafts can also be used to go from belt to chain drive or vise-versa.

oh ya I forgot to mention those aswell, definitely on changing gear ratio is much easier. just swap the sprocket out for the right one.

It is a type of CVT(Continuously variable transmission) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continu...e_transmission
it is an " clutch-less automatic transmission" if u will. it can be chain or belt like in a snow or other type machine.

What is so pointless? Can you not figure out we are not talking about an electric motor but how a TC works? Hello, Mcfly!

If this make you feel better then here you go.
