Default Wheelbarrow hot rod

Hi guys

just realized that I have been a member of this fine forum for 5 years. It means that I joined when my kids were 1, 1 and 2 yo and that I have been toying with the idea of making them a gokart ever since

I have gone back and forth with a few ideas and even aired one of them here:
http://www.diygokarts.com/vb/showthread.php?t=18995

I realized that a scale -32 Ford roadster would be too difficult, especially when it comes to the body. But the hot rod theme had etched deep into my mind.

The kids are now 6, 6 and 7 and it is time to get **** done

Inspired by googling and by projects on here I came up with this sketch.

That is basically what I am gonna try and build. Pretty excited about it!

Default Wheelbarrow hot rod

I went out and got a wheelbarrow and some wheels. I had a 3hp briggs laying around that I may or may not use. Here's the first crude mock up:

Default Wheelbarrow hot rod

The plan for now is to go unsprung in the rear and sprung in the front. Rear brakes only. Any views on this setup would be appreicated 😊

I love the way a traditional front end looks on a hot rod:

So I wanted to try and build something like that for the wheelbarrow hot rod. I started out printing a picture of a dropped I beam axle to the scale that I wanted. I went and got some 12x12mm (~1/2x1/2) square bar and bent it into shape:

That's going to be pretty thin for a front axle...

Looks great! Love the stance. Seems to be well equipped in the motor departement, what kind of engine is that?

It's a 301 Predator with a stage one kit on it. Scoots very nicely!

Default Wheelbarrow hot rod

Continued to work on the front axle. To emulate the Ford I-beam look I bent 2 pieces of 25x5mm (~1"x3/16") flat bar the same shape as the 12x12mm square bar. One piece to fit on top and one piece to fit on bottom. Then welded it all solid. I have a nice Miller Tig welder which I used for this. I haven't use that welder a whole lot and part of the idea was to gain some tig welding experience. Boy did I get exactly that and after what seemed like endless dipping of the tungsten and wondering what the **** I was doing I got a result. The learning curve was steep and the result was ok for what I am trying to do I believe 😊
