Default 6.5 clone + Torque convertor

So I'm tired of getting outbid on ebay auctions or not having enough time to drive hundreds of k's to pick things up. Had been looking for a small motorbike or scooter engine / transmission to use for my cart but instead I'm going to go with this less exciting but much more accessible combo.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/300688108...ht_4608wt_1017

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/3-4-Torqu...#ht_1246wt_947

So my questions are these.

- Any obvious reason why they shouldn't work together?
- The TC is rated to 8hp. If I remove the governor and put a new exhaust on the clone should I worry about going over 8hp?
- Is anyone running this kind of combo? And if so what sort of performance are you getting? Obviously a lot of it will depend on ratios but is it enough power to have some fun?

These guys look like they're having a blast.

!

Any help / advice really welcome. Thanks.

Yeh good setup. See if you can find a genuine comet tav2, the one in the link is fake.
Box stock motors can push up to 10hp, with the same mods. However that is when they are set up perfect.

I wouldn't worry about breaking the tc with those mild mods.

that should work ok I agree with r_chez that you should try and use a real torque converter not a cheap fake one.

Thanks guys.

I'd love to go for the genuine item but they're pretty hard to come by here in Australia. To buy one and get it shipped would be about $120 more, with a total budget if just a few hundred that's a deal breaker.

That's fair enough! Go with the fake, if one of the higher quality ones like I own it should be fine. The only thing that may fail prematurely is the belt.

Thanks for the help guys , here's my next question.

Is there a way to remove the governor but still limit RPM to safe(ish) levels? Maybe I can achieve this by using the throttle adjustment screw, or by altering the throttle cable setup. I'm thinking somewhere in the mid 5's? Going much higher than this might be exploring the limits of the knock-off torque convertor anyway. I guess I could limit it manually by using less right foot but I'm not sure I trust myself in the heat of battle.

I wanna go fast but I don't want to cop an exploding flywheel to the spine. And because of budget and location restrictions heavier valve springs are an option but a replacement flywheel is not.

Your valves will float at mid 5k, which will restrict you. A small pipe keeps 'any' engine under 6k.

I dunno if you have a lot of Honda mowers where you live, but search for a Honda gxv160. The older mower engines with a 'tin top' have aluminium flywheels and can be had cheap. I think all the new gxv160's have tin tops, Ali f/w or not.

I would not take a stock rod or flyhweel over 5500 personally. Too many have gone wrong in box stock karting.

Thanks again Chez.

The more I think about it the more redundant I think it probably is anyway. Because the cheap copy torque convertor I'm using is only rated to 8hp I don't want to go that much higher anyway.

Like a few people I took the time to read the project triple double article and if Travis' dyno figures are to be believed then 8hp can be had at around 4.500 rpm by removing the stock exhaust and installing a header / pipe.

http://personalpages.tds.net/~nascar...ipleDouble.htm

Reckon I should be ok at 4 and a half thousand rpm?

I reccon give that chineese thing whatever you can get :P you should be ok, but you may need a comet belt.
Glad I got a comet 40 for mine now I have a clone and am doing a mild build.
