Default Bringing back the 1972-74 Muskin Dune Cat ... suspension ideas welcome!

Hi All,

I joined up today to the forum an introduced myself and my girls' venture 2 Sisters Keisler. Our first project is to bring back the 1972-74 HPE Muskin Dune Cat "The Dune Cat".

We are now in production of the bodies and they are gorgeous! Next, I am ready to tackle the chassis/frame/suspension. In the following posts I will show some pics of the original karts along with my new bodies, and finally some progress pics of the frame and brake mods I've undertaken.

I am seeking advice on improving the frame for the following:
1. adding front suspension for shock absorption
2. adding rear suspension for the same
3. adding a roll bar and seat belts - should I really do this on a fun/yard/parade kart

I welcome your expertise to help me craft a good quality product. Once I have the frame complete, I will begin offering a complete kit with the body, frame and components for parents and kits to assemble themselves.

Thanks in advance for your input!

Here are some pics of the chassis, starting with the original frame after replacing some rotted metal

Mockup of the frame with aluminum tubular steering rods, shielded ball joints in place of the usual metal rod.

I used some good quality low cost drum brakes and adapted them to the spindle assembly. The original brake was a single 6inch band brake mounted to the differential center section.

Yes, it was factory equipped with a differential and 1inch axles.

LINK

I never gave any attention to the suspension caster/camber/toe-in or Ackerman setting. This is one area I need to decide if it is worth having to develop new spindles/knuckles.

Any suggestions?

The road manners should be fairly decent with the differential, but having decent geometry can only make it better. Try 8-10 degrees caster and about the same KPI angle as a base line. Do you know how to get the Ackermann angle right?

Here is a shot of the brake quadrant area (link), where I have been tinkering with different ideas to actuate the drum front and hydraulic disc rear. This shot has the frame upside down. I wound up scrapping this setup shown to the move the pedal quadrants forward directly under the openings in the body. I did this for better geometry of the pedal motion. And also to potentially offer an extended pedal for younger drivers.

I read the sticky post where you provided a clear explanation with a visual on how to set up the alignment for Ackerman.

The diff is tremendous. It is a Peerless and the width is perfect.

I would like to change the pitman arms to the above the frame. As it was originally designed, it protrudes down and I don't like it exposed so I was going to put a skid plate on there. A Borgeson ujoint on the steering shaft making it a 2pc would be great to clean up all of this, but it adds more cost/weight/complexity.

Any recommendations?

The original engines were 3.5HP and 5HP 4-strokes. Shown here I have the inexpensive $119 6HP Predator from Harbor Freight. I modified the original Comet Torque-a-Verter (link) to add a larger 7inch driven unit to create more torque at the expense of less top end speed.

I would like to put the engine/diff/housing on a hinged section with coil-over shock. Ultimately, I would like to make the rear an IRS like that done of some of the member's karts here.
