Default My Metal

I have done many projects & build logs over the years
...but, their spread all over the place

So, I'll use this "Photo Gallery" thread to help organize & display some of my projects
…& as a chronological "reference" or Table of Contents to more info on "My Metal"

I'll include a pic (or 2 or 3)
...a link to the build thread
...& a video (if possible) with each post

I'll start off with the V8 Chevy starter kart
...this (primitive electric) kart was designed & built back in ~2005

It was powered by (1) 12V car battery
...& the starter motor out of a V8 Chevrolet car.
(Spoiler Alert: it didn't last long)
...then, it got converted to a "gasser"

http://www.diygokarts.com/vb/showthread.php?t=34016

* Sorry no video available for this one

Default The first kart for the twins

Back ~2012, I built a small kart for my twins, Desteny & Winston (~6 yrs. old then)
...we didn't give 'er a name but, it's the purple one

It was powered by a 24V 450W MY-1020 motor
…& (2) 12V 12AH SLA batteries (actually it's the batt pack off of El Mini)

The wheels & differential are off of a riding lawn mower
...& the rear shocks are off of a minibike

It's been so long, I can't find any pics of "just it"
…& there's no build log or video available either

Here are a few pics of it
...but, they are from a few years later (~2014)

* Don't pay any attention to Winston's (orange) kart
...for now

Default Winston's kart

As the kids got bigger, I figured that it would be a good idea to build another kart
...so, they could ride together

This one's for "my buddy" Winston
...tried to make 'er a little lighter & a bit more "sporty" too

It's powered by a 24V 450W motor & (2) 12V 12AH SLA's
…has coil-over rear suspension
...& rolls on riding lawn mower wheels & diff (& seat too)

No build thread for this one
...but, we do have a build/first ride video

Default Desteny's kart

My little Desteny was growin' like a weed
...so, it was time for a bigger kart

I found a 36V scooter "for cheap" & used the electrical system & drive train
…& built a kart around those components

Just, look @ those smiles

Default

Next, I designed & built a kart for me
...so, I could ride/keep up with the kids

I named this one Double Trouble because it was powered by (2) 24V 450W motors
...it was also constructed with wheels & diff from a riding mower

She zipped right along
...but, didn't perform as well as I had expected
…& made it clear to me that 24V was for mostly kids toys

No build thread
...but, I made a video

Default El Dingo (Electric Dingo)

In 2016 I wanted to go "bigger"
...a lot bigger

So, I put a 8,000W electric motor on a Dingo
…& called 'er El Dingo

She took 3rd place in the 2016 Build Off

El Dingo (Electric Dingo)

But, had some issues
...this is when I joined DIYGK

...then, tried some other ideas

Default Hero-Zero Turn Go Kart

In 2017, I had some kinda, out of the ordinary ideas, bouncin' around

Something kinda like a Zero Turn riding lawn mower
...motivated by (2) 36V 500W motors & steered by the drive wheels (no steering wheel)

http://www.diygokarts.com/vb/showthread.php?t=36632

I took 'er for a ride to a local ice cream shop to get a shake
…but, got pulled over by the cops, on the way home

Default El Turbo OD/OV (Electric Turbo Over Drive Over Volt)

Next, I did some experimenting with the "Double Trouble" kart (changed the name to El Turbo)

I made a "fancy switch"
...removed (1) of the 24V motors
…& added another 12V battery

So, it was still "normally" motivated by the 24V 450W motor

But, when the "switch" was activated
...it cut the 24V goin' to the motor
…& simultaneously applied/dumped/surged 36V into the motor

Boom! ~30% "power" increase @ the "push of a button"
…& super fun
...but, it was really hard on the motor

Default El Dingo II

After being disappointed by the performance of El Dingo
...the combination of a big 8,000W motor & 60 lbs. of batteries on the back of a yard kart just didn't seem to work out (it wasn't very agile & also, lost most of it's steering)

So, I figured I'd double up on the next project
…& put a smaller, 1,800W electric motor & some lighter batteries on the Dingo (now named El Dingo II)
…& then, put the "big" 8,000W motor (set up) on a motorcycle

The first couple of pages of this thread covers this build

Thanks!

Your creation is very nice too

The wheelchair motors just weren't up to the task
...but, a couple of 48V 1,000W MY-1020's probably would have worked

Default El Moto

I figured the big motor & heavy batt pack would be a better combination on a motorcycle.

I picked up an old motorcycle, in pretty decent condition
…& commenced mounting up the components.

She turned out pretty good, if I do say so myself
...0 to top speed in ~3-4 seconds

I've put ~250 (electrical) miles on 'er so far

...7.2:1 gear ratio
…& (4) 12V 12AH SLA's

Top Speed ~24 MPH

Default Desteny's Cotton Candy Kart

As my twins got bigger, they were out growing their karts

So, Winston moved up to Desteny's kart
…& for Desteny, I up graded El Turbo from a 24V 450W motor to a 48V 1,000W motor

She (we) also changed the name to Cotton Candy
