Default my brake pads keep falling apart!

hi

so we bought a used old gokart manu. by manco about 2-3 years ago
so it needed a clutch and brakes and we bought and put them on but for some reason the keeping shooting the brake material out the side and on to the ground. theres a metal brake rod connecting from the pedal to the drum and it has a big bend down in the rod and when it is pushed the pad a moved to the left a little. it runs off a predator 212 btw

could that be the problem?

thanks in advance!

The lower metal pin or rod that the brake band attaches to looks like it's bent up and/or backwards.

Both of those rods need to be straight, parallel to each other and 90 perpendicular to the frame. If they're not, the band cannot be applied to the drum properly and it will slide or "walk itself" off the drum.

On the other hand, it sounds like you're describing the brake material is separating from the steel band itself. Is that also part of the problem or no?

We know what you meant by "brake pads", but your system is known as a band brake (or brake band) and drum.

yea that's what I thought too that pin is bent and yes the pad material keeps shooting out and onto the ground could that be because its pulled sideways?

btw I can only get aftermarket parts because the manu. closed a couple of years ago

So the physical braking material is coming off of the band and flying out of the band, under braking pressure??

If the pad material is coming out of the band, you need a new brake band.

The pad material should be bonded to the band.

There is no adhesive that will safely hold it. At least not for less than a new brake band costs.

That's not true. Manco is still around after being sold/bought out/mergered over the years or just going through name changes.

It is/was Manco, then American Sportworks, and now it's American Landmaster.

https://americanlandmaster.com/

Furthermore, they just manufactured the frames mainly. All the other parts were outsourced from other manufacturers so the brake bands, discs, sprockets and other parts are generic, non-branded (in some cases) off-the-shelf items.

I don't know what kart you have but this #1036 brake band, for example, might be your part:
