Default Hemi vs non-Hemi 212cc

I have started this forum in order to answer a complex question.
The question is which engine is better. I am leaving it up to you user to answer the question

There is a difference, but it is not in a large difference. If you're looking at making many upgrades for each small barely perceptible increase in power, then yes, obviously the hemi will be the way to go. There are many parts available for both and not all are interchangeable.

The better question is what do you want to use the engine for?

I bought the hemi 2 years ago for my Murray gt60504x92a. All I have done is the stage 1 kit plus remove the governor, and I will probably leave it at that

The hemi is more widely supported for performance modding.

At stage 1 the difference is pretty much non-existent.

When I take off the side of the engine when I remove the governor, should I scrape off the old broken gasket, and then put the new one on? Thanks!

Well if the gasket is broken, then yes - scrape it off and replace it.

There is nothing I hate more than a torn gasket. I reuse them as long as they aren't too bad. I try to be extra careful when removing covers. I don't have replacements. I suck at cutting my own (plus the thickness of the side cover gasket is important for crankshaft endplay). I end up using RTV when I can, then have to redo it every time I need access. RTV is not recommended for the side cover, because the thickness determines crankshaft endplay.

So ya, scrape it off and replace it.
If not broken, reuse it.

Nope. I use $25 OKO Flat Slides. Knock offs of Keihin PWKs.

Interesting. I'm trying to find a carb better than the stock one, and it also eliminates the stock throttle.

Ole4 on OMB flow tested a stock 212 hemi head against a stock inline 212 and the results were unimpressive. His results show only a marginal advantage with the Hemi. It looks like they are capable of more flow than the inline heads, but only when very heavily modified.

I think I know why: the hemi port seems to favor the short-side radius (SSR) and one side of the valve. Problem is that there is no SSR; it's just a sharp edge. Porting on inline heads often focuses on getting air to follow the roof and go over the valve because getting it to go around the SSR is a losing proposition. The hemi head has the valve angled so more if it is in the way of doing that.

Something else to keep in mind is that hemispherical chambers usually have little to no quench area. That makes them more octane-sensitive and is a consideration if the compression ratio will be increased.

The lack of quench makes them better suited to burning nitromethane. I doubt that anyone here is or will be using nitro though given all its difficulties and $50/gal average price.

This is probably all overkill information for the intent of the thread...
