Just thought I'd also let y'all know, I'm turning 13 in April.
I originally asked my dad for a certain Lincoln Electric welder and safety equipment for my birthday, but he talked to some other people on whether it was a good idea to give a welder to a kid like me, and now that idea's history.
Which is too bad.
But at least instead, my dad's taking me to the Pate Swap Meet this year to get go kart stuff and meet John and Ike from Carsandcameras!
So, I'm happy!
Plus, I'm pretty sure my dad is gonna switch cars with my grandparents and use their Suburban and trailer, so that way I can take my project to the swapmeet!
Trevor - We will keep hounding you until you post the pic with the sign on the kart or near it.

Default Update 3!

Well im okay but i did rebound my finger off the angle grinder oops! But we clean and assembled it as much as we could and the tie rods came in and the shocks. Everything is rusty as heck and most of the bolts are almost rusted in half. Also we made new shock mounts and have to order new rear rims because they are stuck and rusted in half

By the time I was 13 I was doing body work and painting all the neighbors cars with all of my own tools and equipment. I had more tools and equipment than my dad did. Never too young to learn.

When workin' on go karts , having a welder is like having wings
...you CAN do SO MUCH MORE!

As for a 13 yr old with a welder
...Supervised you should be fine
(ask dad to help, he may even learn something, if he isn't careful)

Do some research, watch some "How to" videos (with dad)
...show him that you want to learn
...& will do it responsibly

IMO, you don't need a "Lincoln Welder" starting off.

I have been using a Harbor Freight 90A welder for a few years now.
(I don't think they even sell the 90A model anymore)

Here is a 125A for ~$100.00 (on sale)
https://www.harborfreight.com/flux-1...der-63582.html

They usually come with a mask, hammer & a spool of welding wire

Is that a 120V welder...and you are telling me that you make all those cool karts with such a tiny welder. I was imagining you having like a 180A Lincoln or something...like I'll never get those kind of welds with a Harbor Freight welder.

Yeah I've read some horrible reviews about the HF 120A.
I'd really want a Lincoln to start with simply for their proven reliability.
The reason my dad veto'd it, is because one of his co-workers knows the dangers of welding, and my dad also talked to the lady that gave me my first welding lesson, and she said it was a terrible idea. Soo, I'll just have to use my neighbor's welder. He's got a Lincoln 140 Weld Pak. He uses it to work on his Datsun 240Z with Ferrari air vents behind the front wheels.
Talk about unique!
Anyway, let's stop clogging up poor Trevor's thread.

---------- Post added at 09:42 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:40 AM ----------

To clarify, not "use my neighbor's welder." but "have my neighbor weld it for me 'cause my dad would probably kill me if I weld because he doesn't want me to get hurt."

Be careful with the HF welders, especially at that power level. I don't know that I'd personally trust that.

Anyone competent enough can weld good with a "bad" welder, and someone incompetent cannot weld with a great welder. One guy over on minibuggy.net had to switch to his cheap 90A welder to build his buggy for a bit while he needed to get his 180A Lincoln back together after the voltage knob broke off.

Really the only real differences between a small welder and a large one is how much power they use for welding and the duty cycle (x amount of lamps at x amount of time in a 10 minute time frame. If I had a kid (though may teach my nephew), I will be using my 140i Northern Industrial welder to teach. If I didn't have one, I'd buy a cheap HF welder and do it that way. You teach the fundamentals on any old welder and it will all transfer over.

As much as people give him crap, I would honestly watch ChuckE2009's older welding videos on how to mig weld. Or even videos from Miller or Lincoln. Long as you can get good bead penetration, you should be fine.

Your build is looking great though!

Fair enough. I responded out of habit on that one. Just "be safe, and learn good practices" would have been a better response. But you *have to know* good practices!

I got the stuff i needed just need more chain and waiting on the rear wheels to arrive and be painted i was using 41 chain but it wasn't wide enough and for some retarded reason there is no 420 chain in indiana close to me so i went with 428 and just need to get a different length today because i got a 60t length not knowing it was too short. Also anyone who lives in indiana in clairmont theres a shop called rapid racing, greg is such a cool dude and he builds racing karts but he has almost anything go kart.
Everything i got from him yesterday:
60t box of chain
Brake band
1 inch axel c clips
(He has really good prices compaired to comet tbh)
