Default Clickable thumbnails

Hi everyone. I have decided to try and educate members on the forum regarding posting of pics.

Most people know how to post their pics fine. The problem comes in on the method that is used. Using the option provided by the forum software to upload pics as clickable thumbnails is the most preferred method. Whether you have pics on your PC you need to upload, or whether they are coming from some sort of file sharing site (eg. Photobucket), you can post both types as clickable thumbnails.

I have seen that more and more peple are just posting their pics in such a way so that they are just links to their file sharing site. This means that the pics are large once the post is submitted. There are 2 problems with this.
  1. This site is a source of knowledge for DIY people. Pics speak a 1000 words, and we would like to preserve these pics. If you post your pics as ordinary links to your photobucket (or any other) account, and then delete your account or pics therein, it means that the link is broken and the pics are not displayed here on DIYGK anymore. The source of knowledge then disappears. If you post the pics as clickable thumbnails, they are uploaded to this site, and can therefor never be lost

  2. We would like to keep the look of threads as clean as possible. This means no large pics. With large pics, it makes threads very bandwidth intensive, and there are some people on this site who have very slow internet speeds.

2b. When a large pic is posted within a thread, it expands the view and causes a "scroll" effect, and it stretches any text on the page across the entire new format...which makes comfortable reading pretty much impossible.

So if you are going to post pics, please use the facility provided to make clickable thumbnails. It allows you to post 10 pics per post (which is quite a lot).

I am going to be on a mission editing posts if people do not comply. Some of you will see that I have done this already to some of your posts. If you feel that I am invading your space in any way, please PM me and we can sort it out

Below are some pics on how to post your pics as clickable thumbnails.

From one of Roberts posts

Quote:
If you want to post pics, you'll need to one of three things.

1) If you're posting a new thread, just scroll down and look for "manage attachments". That's it.

2) If you're replying, click "quote" and you'll get to the right window.

3) If you're "quick replying", just click "go advanced" at the bottom of the page, then scroll down to find "manage attachments".

You'll get a pop-up and be able to upload photos. When you're done, click "close" and the photos will be attached to your post.
All I can add is that in the manage attachments window, you will see place to paste your URL's of your pics. Click upload and you are golden

So, how do we train/ enforce this? I'm the last person to ask on all this computer stuff; the only reason I (now) know how to upload pic's is from what this site has taught me. And I've only done that a couple of times.

As far as all these "Social Media Sites" that so many of you seem to be addicted to; why? Maybe it's just me, but I just, don't, get it.

Me neither, brother. Me neither. I have never used, nor do I intend to use Flakebook. And TWITter just sounds like a 14-year-old girl.

I think that training/enforcing is going to be an ongoing battle. If we can get the existing members to change their posting habits, then it will just be the new guys that need to be targeted. Poor Robert is paying for the hosting, bandwidth, site etc, so we might as well help out

I must say that I also stay away from social media sites. I did hear the other day that YouTube, Twitter and Facebook are going to join. It is now going to be called YouTwittFace.

but facebook, its a very easy and cheap method of gathering a group of people together

in a world where u cant just find someones number in a phone book anymore its an easy method to find old long lost freinds or make new ones

quite a few middle age people i know (parents and freinds) have got on it and love it for finding old freinds that coiuld be anywhere in the world

i personally like it for organising big events with freinds

Some people don't want to be so 'findable' though...

Bingo. Why are these people in my past? Because I want them there!

I have looked over my wife's shoulder enough times to know that Facebook is without a doubt the greatest time-waster since the advent of the internet. Yeah, okay- you can message people. But there are a kabillion little doodads and apps and bells and whistles, and enough BS to knock a horse over. Not for me.

I agree ! I have a facebook and a youtube account

But unlike others ... its just my friends and family on my facebook , not 400 people needed for the online games through facebook . It is a good way to stay in touch with people (hence social media site) that you don't see every day or possibly a relative that lives out of state .

As far as youtube ..... I have found that youtube can be very informative ! Its almost like a google search engine . If you want to know something .... just type it in , look for the one you think matches and watch .

No twitter account so .... I cant say anything for it .

I will have to keep the upload picture as thumbnail in mind next time I upload ( make conscious note to self ) . I have a photobucket account and have had for years . As well as my Facebook (for friends and family ) and youtube (for my mudding adventures in the back woods).

One way to look at it .... If your computer crashes , Your photos are saved if they are on a site like this . So online media sites are not bad places !

I am also a computer tech as well as a fabricator and several other things . But as a computer guru , I utilize a second hard drive where I keep all my important files , media etc so when Winblowz crashes .... I haven't lost all my important stuff .

Another thing I would like to point out to others which seems to aggravate me for some reason ( don't know why ) . If you are posting a pic ..... make it larger than the thumbnail ! There is a site called resizemypic . You can make your thumbnail any size you want .... please make it large enough through a thumbnail upload to actually view it !

just google , resize my pic

I wasn't a big fan of this initially but here is a huge advantage of it, for whatever reason, my office blocks Photobucket which includes embedded images, so many of your and my own posts, even CL ads do not display the images when I'm at work (which is more often than I prefer), using the attachment manager displays the photos here in the office regardless of the original image host

i don't have any captures for you, but...

after you've used (and closed) the "manage attachments" window, click your cursor where you want the thumbnail to be. then click (the down-arrow next to) the paperclip, and you will get a dropdown with your uploaded pics listed...click the one you want, and it will place an attach-code inside your text.

click preview...if you don't like how it came out, you can delete the attach-code (or cut and paste) and try again. when moving the code, be sure to include all the brackets. don't worry about messing things up, deleting the attach-code from inside the text does not delete your image.

getting creative with spacing of your text can result in a slick post after you get the hang of it.

make sure to use "preview" a lot while learning this, after a while it will get easy.

if you don't do anything with your uploaded pics, you'll automatically get a thumbnail gallery at the bottom of your post, as already demonstrated...any uploaded image that has been "attached" inside the text will not be displayed in the lower thumbnail gallery.

I've been clicking my "cursor" for awhile....(maybe it's not working because I don't have any teeth left)....but my phone is not listening.....oh well.....

Guess there's just some things you can't do with a phone that you can with a computer....

On my phone....large pics are really only viewable a section at a time...meanwhile....veiwing pics and text simultaneously is impossible....the pics are bigger than my screen, while the text looks like this:

|:-| .......*.....~:-| ............. :.,, ii`<*=-:~ :~ ,,...........-,...?:-}
