Default Newbie here!

Hello everyone,

Iím new to the forum - quick question for the keen karters/racers on here. Can you make your kart quicker while racing ? Now Iím not mechanical minded but I was at a local go kart track (TeamSport) and posting ok times on the board but one guy on another group was posting a second quicker then me, now can you open the throttle more while racing? Because this guy was tampering with something near the engine on the straights and even coming out of corners he was back to tampering - judt wondered if that is possible or Iím making excuses in my head for being slower then the other guy.

He was manually bypassing his governor. The engine may go boom when that's done too much, though.

What engine do you have on your kart? If it's a Predator 212 or Honda clone, governor removal isn't too risky, but Briggs flatheads are riskier.
If you put a billet connecting rod in there and remove the governor, you can get higher rpms with less risk.

Actually no. Predators or other Chinese clones (de-governed) are rather fragile and usually experience a flywheel self-destruct condition if spun past 3600 revs (after governor removal). The flywheel magnets oftentimes try to attempt a low orbit if you catch my meaning.

The Briggs is a rather strong platform. They started racing them with garden-variety (literally your basic garden tiller engine) Briggs 5 HP before there was ever any real aftermarket (ARC, etc) speed parts introduced, much less an introduction of the famed Briggs Raptor engine which was later on.
Stock flywheels too.

But hey, if you meant adding the best upgrades (billet flywheel, con rod, valves, etc) for each engine platform that money can buy, I'd be hard pressed to be able to say which one is then a riskier venture.
