Default RG 250 Gamma Clutch question

Anyone know much about these motors?
I have a Suzuki RG 250 2-stroke gamma motor which I plan to replace a GN 250 on a go kart.

The only thing that's stopping me is I want to know how the clutch works. I know that it works differently from other motors as I think it engages by pushing a metal rod into the motor. But when I try to engage it, it doesn't spring back. Any idea on how the clutch of this motor works?

I found a fiche view of your clutch here. It appears that the Gamma clutch has a coaxial pushrod that is actuated from the other side of the engine case. My old KTM 300 and my GSXR 600 engine both have similar clutch linkages.

If it doesn't spring back, I'd say your clutch springs are weak or broken. However, before you go tearing into your motor I should ask how you are actuating the linkage? You won't be able to turn the little lever on the engine with your hand. The handlebar clutch lever is the only way you'll get enough mechanical advantage to overcome the springs with your hand.

The thing is I don't have the original clutch lever. And I can't try it out with the clutch pedal on the cart because its getting a bearing repaired. Would there be another way to try pulling the cord with hand tools? how far does the rod have to go in for it to engage the clutch?

Try slipping a short length of pipe over the clutch pivot (#26 on the fiche view). You may have to smash the end of the pipe flat to get it close enough to the cases to turn. Failing that, pop the clutch cover off and inspect the clutch. Good luck!

im pretty sure there is a 'gamma' forum. Mostly 400s and 500s but that would be a good place to look/ask for info on your engine

I'm a little confused at the pipe part. Also the guy who I bought the motor from said it had been sitting for 5 years. I got the motor to run & it runs very well, changes gears with no hassle. I drained the sump and oil is clean.

How far does the push rod have to go in to engage the clutch?

Use the length of pipe as a lever, slipping it over the clutch pivot in order to give you more leverage.

I don't know how far the pushrod will have to move in order to disengage the clutch. It's not very much. Consider how short the clutch springs are. Total clutch clearances are usually in the 0.020" to 0.040" range. I'd say the pushrod moves maybe 1/4" in total, just as an educated guess.

I decided that I should just get a clutch lever and slip it onto a pipe to test it. Someone in my area is selling parts from the bike with the same motor.

This thread is a year old. I don't think you are going to get any answer
