Default Electric quad to gas conversion...possible or waste of money?

So I was on eBay just looking around and found a old electric quad for sell for parts. Messaged the seller and he said that there was still a frame for sale and sent me a pic of what was left (first pic).

Would it be a decent idea to make it into a gas powered quad? I was thinking the predator 98cc engine would fit right in without having to cut the frame. There might be some issues with lining up the chain and the clutch, but looks simple enough.

This wouldn't be for me, but for some family members who aren't quite able to balance a minibike yet.

I tried to look up the quad but can't find much. It's called "Dingchang" judging from the pics.

As far as what is has, it appears to have the handlebars, wheels, axle/sprocket, etc. Even the old motor still on it. Might be junk or a fun project...

Thoughts? What would y'all offer for it? He said he could do $135 shipped for what I see in the first pic. Might could talk him down.

Listing did say the rear axle was locked up, but might just be the motor/bearings/sprocket was rusted.

I'm open to any suggestions or comments y'all have!

Yeah I thought they would be cheap here as well...been looking on Craigllist, FB Marketplace, etc. and can't seem to find a decent price on anything.

I don't do Facebook. Craigslist is still good, especially cause older folks tend to use it and sell some gems, but OfferUp has been working well for my small engine habit.

Do the math.

1.) Can you buy the materials & construct that frame for $135.00?

2.) Add up the cost to buy the parts. (tires, rims, shocks, handle bars, body etc.)

These numbers will/should help you answer your question.

* Simply a good cleaning & fresh bearing is usually the remedy for a locked up rear end.

Good point. Going to see what I can talk him down to. I'll report back if I can get him down any.

Got him down to $115 shipped...figured it was worth that.

I forgot I had an old Baja warrior engine in the garage...might try and cram that in there. We'll see how it goes if I have to I will just use the smaller predator engine (79cc?).

Once it arrives and I get it cleaned up I will post some pics.

I figure if it just doesn't work with gas engine I can just make it electric again.

79cc is the smallest Predator. Haven't seen a 98cc yet.

Quad was shipped today...looks to be arriving next Tuesday, 2/19. That is a long time to wait!

I guess I will be gathering parts in the meantime. All I can think of now I'll need is the engine (duh), throttle cable, and some way to do a brake (not sure the electric motors had one, or how they worked?). Edit* Also need a clutch and some chain. Not sure what the sprocket size is though. Will have to see.

Seller said the tires hold air so we'll see about that.

One question: is it generally better to go ahead and dissemble the whole thing as-is, then clean it, or go ahead and clean if first thing? I plan to get out the pressure washer lol. For my RC hobby, I generally hose them off and let them dry before starting any disassembly...how do y'all prefer to do it?

I'm torn; if it's dirty to begin with you might miss some things you can't see, but washing it first might mess up something that you would have caught before...

Well, it got here early

Spent most of today getting it cleaned up and put back together (seller used 2 boxes and put all the parts in one and the frame in the other...one box was a pound shy of 50lbs lol!).

The frame is in great shape, as are the tires, wheels, and brakes.

I believe all I need now is a few odds and ends, as well as the motor, and I will be good to go.

I'm going to start a build thread (probably with dumb questions in it ) soon.

Stay tuned.

Well dang...you weren't kidding. They are really cheap. Like under $100 for one! And they seem like they'd fit better than a Predator too.

Something like this? It looks kind of small...https://www.amazon.com/Sange-Stroke-...7&sr=8-10&th=1

I'm worried it would have enough power to pull a 120ish pound person plus the weight of the quad though.

They did make a 99cc a bunch of years ago. It was phased out just like the 318? for the 301 and the 79cc units. If you look at the Predator Ad on YouTube, you will see the 318 and the 99cc Predators.

They discontinued the 346 Predator 11hp engine. I think that engine was either a Lifan variant or LCT variant.

Ah, I knew I wasn't crazy!

This looks to be the best price on Amazon for the 2 stroke engine: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...0S1KX1L2P&th=1

Stupid question; it appears the exhaust exits out underneath? Or am I looking at the picture wrong?

I wouldn't try use that on a quad. Rather look at the 50cc quad engines

Cool. Only thing I'm unsure of is how the chain/sprockets would work. The 50cc quad engine says it uses 116L T8F chain?

I've found some sprockets (ones in the other thread), but not sure what I could use for the 50cc engine.

A quick google search pulled up this: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/T8F-...821673921.html

Amazingly enough that sprocket size mounting holes line up EXACTLY with the sprocket on it already! I measured and they are the same. So, I could use that sprocket and chain with the Amazon 50cc quad engine! Judging by the gear calculator I'd be looking at about 27 mph (not sure what those 50cc engine rev to however)
