Nice 3.5 HP Briggs!(Yes I can tell it's around 3 HP)
Looks real nice! I've got a white/maroon 3 HP FrankenBriggs I'm working on a bit. Neat little motors!
I would've tried to stick with the original red color, but that's just me. It looks amazing!
Whatcha gonna put it on?

I have no plans to put it on anything at this time, I just wanted to fix it up. According to the manual it is 2.5hp but the remnants of decals under the top layer of paint said it is 2hp. I didn't measure the bore and stroke so cannot confirm anything. The base color appeared to be a sort of dirty orange and was very hard to remove. It had a stencil painted on it (also under the top paint) that read PHX Parks, Which means that at one time it belonged to Phoenix Parks and Recreation (local park management). It may have been on a go kart but I do not know for sure.

I am waiting on new decals and not knowing for certain what size engine it is, I ordered what the manual says it is.

Are there any codes stamped into the blower housing? If so, post 'em up and I can tell you what displacement and HP it is.
If you measure the bore accurately(I'm talking to the hundredth of an inch), I can also confirm displacement and power.
I'm a bit of a Briggs flathead nut.

8 cubic inches(3 HP like mine)
1 Basic design series
1 Horizontal crankshaft, Vacu-Jet carburetor, pneumatic governor
0 Plain bearing/DU Non Flange mount
2 Rewind starter

0131-01 is the type number, there's no literature available to decode those, but it means minor stuff like color and governed speed.

If the decal did say 2 HP, it may have had a blower housing swap. There should be a number on top of the cylinder head. If it's an 8, it is indeed a 3 HP.
Neat little motor!

ok, so the blower housing has the model number on it I posted earlier, the cylinder head has 8c on it, but the original manual for this engine identifies it as 7.75cu 2.5hp at 3600 rpm and the original decal (on the blower housing) said 2hp

Either way I ordered a 2.5hp decal set (from Australia) and that's what it will get.

Chances are it was underrated for whatever it was being used for. Understand that these engines were designed to turn forever at lawn mower speeds, so in some cases, these utility engines are actually detuned for longevity.
Either way, 1/2 HP isn't that big a difference.
About 3 HP though.

Oh no it isn't!
It's not complete until it's on a kart!
But seriously, what's the use of an engine if it doesn't power anything?
