A traditional dead axle set up weighs less than all the stuff you got set up to MAKE a dead axle..... that solid axle pieces you have AND ALL the bearings weigh MORE than a tube with 2 bolts welded to the ends....... and be STRONGER/STRAIGHTER than youre idea of a diff.....

Exactly- and it gets worse. .... without knowing the parameters of the contest- this is the last place I would look for weight savings. Aluminum frame, live axle rims bored for either bushings or roller bearings on a dead axle turned down. Fiberglass and Kevlar wherever possible. Wheelbarrow tires........Aluminum fasteners. Aircraft paint. Graphite tubing... 2 cycle engine.

Need I go on.......
