I tried the 140 head on the 160 block & it's got loads of grunt so, I think I might do a mod or two & leave it at that for now.

Thanks for offering chez

Default ... & it continues

A few months ago, I posted a wanted ad on gumtree for a shifter kart rolling chassis. Just as the ad is about to expire, I get an email offering me a complete kart minus engine raced up until two months ago for $250. I asked about price negotiation & was told "if I sell for less than that I may as well keep it for parts". Fair enough, no harm in trying...

"You wouldn't happen to have a 30mm axle would you?" I asked
"Actually, I do. I'll throw it in" came the reply
"I also have a trolley you can have if you want it."

Awesome

So, for $250, I got a complete rolling chassis, a 30mm solid axle with full length keyway & a kart trolley

Did you expect anything different? That trailer has more than paid for itself.

Anyhoo,

I've also been collecting parts here & there for another build & spotted & eventually won some items on ebay. When I went to pick them up, the guy asked me "do you need anything else?"

Long story short, for $100, I walked away with:
2x brake disc carriers, one with a damaged disc
1x sprocket carrier
2x 30mm wheel hubs
1x steering column
1x steering wheel boss
1x 14t 219pitch engine sprocket
1x 219 pitch chain
1x brake pedal which, coincidently, matches a set I already have
3x like new 30mm axle bearings

As I said to HaM551, go karts are like everything else; more popular on this side of the country &, therefore, there's more of them...

Twin post!

So, does everyone remember what those engines looked like when I got them? Here's what the 160 looks like now:

Major BUMP!

Well, I've been out "wheelin' & dealin'" again, this time I picked up two Pope Spitfire 40 push mowers with 4hp 4 stroke engines but only one catcher; cash outlay so far, $38 & a 30 minute detour while I was picking up the little princess.

Both were non runners as the recoil springs are broken but, I was determined to get at least one running today.

After selecting the better looking one of the two, the first thing I did was check for spark & compression; all good. I knew the fuel would be bad so, remove tank, drain & rinse then refit. Next remove carb bowl plug & a purpleish liquid runs out, that's ok, that's what it's meant to look like... wait, why is it turning brown?

Removal of the bowl revealed a small amount of brown sludge & rust in the bottom of the bowl (that's not good...). Over to the other engine, remove the bowl & it's pristine After seeing that I thought I'd better clean the carb.

There was no visible varnish in the throat so, I removed the jet & emulsion tube, dipped them in fuel, blew out the tube, cleaned the jet with an oxy tip cleaner, checked the needle was seating & put it all back together.

Carb back on & everything bolted up, I pulled the cord; splutter, splutter, cough, die... Now, remember I said the recoil spring was broken? That means every time it didn't start, I had to remove the starter assembly, rewind it by hand, & refit it. Thankfully, the assembly was made in such a way that it could be disassembled so, that made it a bit easier.

So, rewind the rope, refit, pull the rope & splutter, splutter, cough, die... Remove, rewind the rope, refit, pull the rope & splutter, splutter, cough, pop, die... Well, it's improving but, this is getting old... Pulled the spark plug out, it's wet. Dry it off, give it a bit of a clean then blast air into the plug hole to dry out any fuel.

Everything back together, full choke, pull the cord & splutter, splutter, splutter, ROAR!

Then I adjusted the idle, tweaked the governor a bit & mowed the grass at the side of my house, which it did flawlessly, without missing a beat...

I think I done good

Side note: here's a pic of my buddy on his new toy that he picked up for a song

I'm often disappointed to see good deals going in Qld but, more so in Vic; if I expanded my search radius, who knows what I'll find...

Having said that, my "uncomfortable horseshoe" has been working overtime lately; in the past 2 weeks I've collected
-2 pocket bikes & a mini harley style frame
-2 2 stroke mowers
-2 4 stroke mowers
& I've only spent $150 so far. I look at it as karma for the $300 I spent having my go kart frame produced

Yep definitely a south east thing

I'd be lucky if there was even a page on gumtree of karts in the whole state

Let alone the price

As for engines
A non running 10hp is 500 up

Sure, just give me a day or two. I'll try to get more pics of my buddy's chopper too, it's bigger but, way cooler than mine with pee wee 50 running gear

Supply & demand my friend; the rarer something is, the more it's worth.

As the majority of the population is on the east coast, similar items are more popular but, available in much higher numbers
