I actually did this in my yard over the winter, and i wouldnt worry too much about the layout at first. I have an area 200ft x 270ft in my backyard, and started with a simple oval track. Since then i have added to the center with s curves and stuff. As long as you leave it fairly flat it doesnt take much time to modify it in the future.

I have a few pictures after drifting the oval track in the mud, i will try to post them here. I was so covered in mud but it was worth it. LOTS OF FUN!!
