i have ran 6 hp, 13 hp and 30+ hp on an 8t sprocket, and have never had an issue. No chain tensioner either. Just keep everything lined up, lube, and tension the chain right and you will be okay.

gear for 25-40 mph at 3600 rpm. Do the calculation assuming the engine shaft is the jackshaft.

You can go as low as 8 tooth on the 30 series jackshaft with 40/41/420 chain.
