One is a 1" shaft and the other is a 3/4" shaft.

I know nothing about brigs motors so I can't help you with which one you need.

Welcome.
Pics will help with a more accurate advice but it seems hard to beat the predator for value for money. Upgrade parts readily available and they are simple and easy to work on.

My guess is the cam de-compression mechanism is playing up.

If you had trouble with the spark plug removal, removing the cam is going to be fun.
