Fix the original engine. You'll be much happier. A $400 rebuild now will have you running for 20 more years. Better performance than a predator to. It can be daunting looking at an odyssey project....

They're known to be hard to pull. If it been sitting a while put some 2 stroke in there and give it a few slow pulls with the plug out. Get everything lubed up. They didnt have a compression release....

Is it a metal gasket? If it is use permatex copper spray. Clean the gasket up(remove all black gunk you speak of) spray a thin even layer(enough to make it look like a copper gasket, dont get crazy)...

First check for spark. Pull the plug, put it back in the boot and put it against one of the head nuts. With the ignition on kick it iver and see if the plug sparks. If it does check the compression....
