What are the steps I need to take in order to get a lot more ponies out of a vanguard 16hp v twin in the back of my mini cup ? I wanna take it beyond where it is do I need to upgrade rods ? Flywheel?

A vanguard might be tricky to get a hold of parts for...but if you can this is what you should do.

Things to do, in the order they should be done.
Exhaust system: straight pipe it.
Governor delete & New billet rods and flywheel(should go as a combo or risk blowing the motor)
Intake system: new carb/bigger jet, airfilter, etc.
Add a a big lobed cam.
new better spark plug
High compression head...or shave the head/thinner gasket(and usually a change in spark timing)
Port and polish intake and exhaust.
Better valves and rockers.

Past this, I think you just need to get a bigger/better motor.

I REALLY can't understand why you need MORE than 16 HP. :huh:
Unless you're doing something like the Carsandcameras Predator 670 rail dragster.
You could also just GET a Predator 670, then you can for sure get parts from: https://www.performance670.com/index.php

I’m curious as well, subscribed to this thread. I have a vanguard (was told 18 hp, but I haven’t fact checked that yet), and I’m going to put it on a Manco Silver Fox that I recently acquired. And in my case at least, I want to make a high hp kart because why not? Lol. Yeah, I could fork out cash and buy a Vegas carts engine, predator v twin, etc but I want to be able to sit back, crack open a cold one and have that sense of accomplishment that I put it together. I’m not a racer or even close but I like going faster than my buddies. Oh, my friend named the kart I’m building Death Machine because of obvious reasons lmao.

There's quite a bit you can buy. Better 2 barrel carburetors, billet flywheel with starter ring gear, billet connecting rods. Most who build these Vanguards are either mower racers and mud motor boaters. I would look at Back Water and ARC Racing. Just search Briggs Vanguard 16hp or model 30 and you should find a lot of performance parts for it. But these will be expensive so you'll have to stretch it out over time. Even modding a Predator 670 would be just as expensive.

Step one is gather up about $1000 to get started with. The rods and flywheel will burn off $600 right out of the gate. A cam will be 200-300 and pistons 150-200. There goes your grand without even getting into the heads, exhaust, induction, and machine work for which I would budget another $1000.

As a side note, the Vanguard 16hp shares the same parts with the 14hp as well. Really it's just the carburetor that makes the difference between the two.

With just these mods, you are looking easily around $750. That's not including ratio roller rockers, head work, different valves, different push rods (all extra stuff that could help).

You can still have a ton of fun with a mild build, billet rods, valve springs (highly suggest getting the tool to compress them, 60lbs is not an easy task), flywheel. A bit of polishing on the exhaust port will help it breathe better.

Funny you say that because the average purchase price between my project cars is $2050. That's just a fraction of what's in them though.

Well, yeah. My dad used to have an old project Toyota Corolla(trying to save money), that he bought for 2K. We ended up ditching it(giving up, not driving it into a ditch).
It was not a very good deal, but yeah, for the cost of doing serious upgrades on any twin cylinder, you can buy a car.

Yes, for what a full build costs on a v twin, you can probably buy a used 600cc sport bike engine from a junkyard and a lot of the necessary parts to install it.
