Baja Dune 6.5 Go Kart Restore
8 Attachment(s)
My grandpa has had this kart sitting in his backyard for some time now because the motor on it had seized. I decided while I build up funds and parts to build my other kart I was going to get this one running again. I bought a 212cc predator engine for it. The clutch is rusted to the old engine and I can't seem to get it off so I was thinking of just replacing it. I will also need to replace the chain and one of the tubes for the tire. I'm looking to get everything running by the end of this week and then I'm going to sand blast the frame and powder coat. Here's some pics:

The first pic isn't mine it is what it looked like before my gpa removed the roll cage.

Sweet, Yah just buy a clutch with the same amount of teeth and the correct shaft size. Do you have the cage? I like the seat belts on this kart.

No, don't have the cage anymore. I was told it made it difficult to get into the kart so that's why it was removed.

Nice. You will have it going in no time

go to tractor supply and get a clucth chain and a tube or just slime that will work

I'm wondering about the clutch. I need one that will work with the 212cc predator. The one that was on the old engine looks to be held in place by these rings. All the ones I see online say a bolt and set screws so I'm not sure exactly what I need to get. Any pointers?

If you have a threaded hole in your crank, you can pretty much get any clutch. Most of them attach using bolts and set screws. Has your engine got a threaded crank. If not, you can always drill and tap

get one from tractor supply thats whats on my preadtor they are 50 dollors and they have a 10 tooth 45 chain one and a 13 tooth 35 chain one both fit on a 3/8 shaft like on the predator then go find a screw for it in there to you could get the old clucth off the old motor by use in a puller or useing cut up 2by4s put the 2by4 pieces behind the clucth and take a rail road spike and hammer it in

So good news!! Got the clutch off the old engine finally! Took some break free and some wiggling but finally got it off. Went through it and it appears to function properly. It was held on by snap rings. They were a pain.. literally. Sliced my knuckle trying to get them off lol. Alls well though. Trip to the go kart shop tomorrow to pick up a new chain and two inner tubes and I should he riding it tomorrow!

I picked up a pair of snap ring pliers at a HF parking lot sale for a couple bucks. Havent tried em yet. Snap rings are a pain in the a$$

rcarteraz07 05-10-2012 07:26 PM

Had a pair of them but they were older and not working very well. That's how I sliced my knuckle. It slipped off and my finger went flying lol.

For it running finally!! It runs pretty good too! GPS had it at 25 mph which is pretty awesome considering I'm 300 lbs!! Lol. Now I just need to come up with a clutch/chain cover since the plastic one it had was melted from before. Ruined my white shirt today from grease and dirt lol. Had to stop riding because some cops went down the street to a house nearby! Lol don't need a ticket! Once I get a new job I'm going to extend the frame(i'm just a little too tall lol) then sandblast and powder coat it.

rcarteraz07 05-11-2012 10:39 PM

Oh and get a be seat cover! Lol

landuse 05-14-2012 03:50 AM

I'm glad you got her running

rcarteraz07 05-14-2012 08:55 AM

Yeah, been riding it pretty hard. Got the whole family on it too! They all love it which is good. The tires there were on it were pretty sun rotter I guess. They started coming apart. Had to replace one and another blew yesterday so it's currently out of commission. I plan on going over to the go kart shop today and getting some new tires as long as they aren't priced too high. If they are I will just order them online.

I was wondering though. Currently the tires are 4.10/3.50-4. Could I get new wheels and tires that are 6" that have the same 3 bolt pattern to give a little more clearance? Would this affect the gearing too much cuz I would like to keep the same speed and acceleration. Or would I have to get a new sprocket and clutch?

landuse 05-14-2012 08:59 AM

Your gearing will be affected somewhat, just because the tyres are larger. I cannot remember what your gearing was, but it shouldn't be too much of a change though

Doc Sprocket 05-14-2012 09:04 AM

Here's a quick rule of thumb. Measure the total diameter of your tires. Let's say they measure 12". Now, add 10 % (1.2"), so you're fairly safe going to a tire that measures 13.2". This is of course assuming your gear ratio is appropriate in the first place.

So I want to come up with some sort of fenders for this. Not only to avoid the rocks that get thrown at me but also my legs hitting the wheels. I got this yesterday and it wasnt too fun!

landuse 05-15-2012 01:50 AM

Ouch!! How did you get your leg so close to the wheel?

rcarteraz07 05-15-2012 08:54 AM

Lol this kart is actually kind of short for me. One thing I really want to do is extend the frame. Well I thought I was going to hit a curb and being a dummy I put my leg out to stop it but I ended up hitting the tire and causing this! Pretty dumb! Lol
