Just came back from a Harbor Freight parking lot sale and they had the 6.5 blues for $65!!!!   :eek   :out: :out: :out: :D :D :D :D :mad2: :mad2:

I was sooooo tempted to buy a couple but I don't really have a need for them. I don't know if they have them at that price at all locations but it might be worth a try to check at your local HF.

WooHoo! I'm going to check my local HF! These motors are worth it. Very dependable, and box-stock, they'll make your creations MOVE... even if you're just replacing a briggs or whatever! I put one on my son's DoodleBug mini bike, replacing the little 2.8 hp engine and keeping the gearing the same. Same top speed (27 mph) but you can beat traffic across intersections with it! (Heh,heh!) Too bad Harbor Freight doesn't sell the chinese clones of the Comet Torq-a-verters!..... (HINT)

My son's MiniBike is the Orange DoodleBug bought from PepBoys for $250. It has a clone engine of a Honda flathead (Lifan 2.8hp) and stock, it'd hit 27mph, even with my Lard-Butt on it. The HF 6.5hp REALLY makes the little thing scoot, though. My daughter (100lbs soaking wet) Can get it to do 20' burnouts in dirt when she takes off from a stop. God help her if it were to hook up after spinning for a bit. I should video it- pretty hilarious to watch. BACK ON SUBJECT, even at $130, the HF 6.5s are WORTH IT.

I was thinking of doing the same thing to my DB30. Did you have to do anyhting special to fit the engine? My engine which is the 6.5 hp jiang something (blue one) is pretty wide and for the crank shaft to line up with the sprocket, it has to almost hang off of the engine plate.

Yeah, I had to drill a new set of holes so the engine would line up... the motor doesn't hang out as bad as you'd think. If you want I can post a better picture of it from the top....

Depends on the gearing. 1:5 vs 1:1... Hmm...:sifone:

I kept the stock gearing and the governor, so it accelerates like crazy to 27mph, then it kinda goes quiet.... not much of a load for the motor, I guess. The brakes LOOK impressive, but they seem to require constant adjustment. I could probably up the top speed by messing with the gearing, but to be honest- this thing is a bit squirrelly, and our best wipe-outs have been on it.

I am almost done with putting my 6.5hp blue engine on my DB30. The only thing left that i have to do is to make the engine compatable with the twist throttle. How do i do this? i cannot find anything that would help at any hardware stores. This is my first project and i do not have alot f know how so any help would be greatly appreciated.

JerryAssburger

Run the throttle cable up to the engines throttle handle. (Ours connected with a bent paper clip) and clamp the outer part of the cable in place. The HF blue engine has a few provissions for this, but you gotta pull the aircleaner to see the set-up.

Okay- I'll take pix of it tomorrow and post it. These engines are MUCH easier to hook up to a throttle than a B/S flathead...

I kept the stock gearing

which is.....? I would like to know this gearing

Ooops. Let me go look.....12t on the clutch, 66t on the rear wheel. (5.5:1). The HF 6.5hp is almost overkill on this thing, but since it's cheaper than other alternatives, why not? Right now, the gov. is set at 3100 rpm, because the kids keep biffing it on this thing.

Hey man do you think you could tell me where you drilled your holes for the engine? like how far from where and stuff like that. I need to drill my holes but i want to make sure i get it at least close to the right spot before i start drilling. thanks

Sorry about the wait, Jonesie! Here is a close-up of what I did...
http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m290/jerryassburger/orangeENG.jpg

What I did was "eyeball" it and line up the engine/clutch sprocket with the rear. The holes/slots ended up being 5/8" to the right (sitting on the minibike, looking down). If you had the little Lifan 2.8hp like I did, then you'll need to remove the spacer-block that sits under the Lifan Motor. Check and double check before you start cutting. Also, I have an old B/S block that's been gutted; I use it as a template for the mounting holes.
That's how I did it.

Thanks man. HUGE help!! ill let you know how it goes. OO and one more question lol did you use the kill switch on the bike? cuz the switch on the engine is an on/off not a kill so i wasnt sure if it would be compatible. Also there is only one visible wire coming out of the engine and the doodle bug kill switch has 2. thanks again

JerryAssburger
04-25-2008, 01:40 AM
I definitely have to go out and look. If I remember right, I wired one of the wires from the DoodleBug switch to ground, the other to the HF's kill knob. If the kill knob is "on" the DB's switch doesn't work. This was to preserve the function of the low-oil sensor. I'll trot out tomorrow morning and check my connections. Good luck with the set up.

See what I mean? That's why the 80-100lb kids keep biffing it on mine. If I can find a decent motor of less hp, I might put it on and use the Blue Terror on something else.

Hey guys! I am new here, but found your forum by searching for input on the HF blue motors. I just bought a used Manco Interceptor go-cat for my son and found out that the carb was bad. Ended up buying the Blue Motor for it instead of a new carb (it was cheaper that way). Anyway, the point is that the salesman was trying to sell me the extra warranty ($35 for 2 years, $20 for one) and I said no. He then said that he would knock off an extra 15% if I wanted it. I already had a coupon for the engine for $97, so I said what the heck. Come to find out, he gave me the discount on the total purchase, which made the two year warranty only cost me about $13! I just thought that some of you might be interested in checking in to this for your next blue motor. He said that if anything at all goes wrong with it, you simply bring it in and walk out with a brand new one, no questions asked.

Ha ha! So apparently this site is jammed packed with references to the, as Jerry said, Blue Terror. You got that motor for fairly cheap!

Hey Jerry, do you have any kind of cover over the clutch and chain? and did you check your connection of the kill switch?

Sorry Jonesie, I spaced getting a picture of the connections,. I'll go look and post it very shortly. No- I took off the chain guard/clutch cover even before I swapped motors, because it was kinda deformed and constantly getting banged by the chain.

Hmm... no questions asked? Seriously? Hell yeah...

Clone blocks are known to blow their heads off by the seam... Like seriously half the blown will blow off. This however... is when you're going 7,500RPM...

Either way... great choice.

Bouncing around is not the problem. It's centrifugal forces.

I kinda tipped the engine over to the side a bit to put a little extra oil into it. Sensor hasn't given me any problems on the minibike. Brief update: My daughter literally rolled it into the neighbor's chain-link fence (she's okay!), so I figured there was a better use for the motor besides "Spin Cycle".... I replaced it with a B/S 3hp flatty, and the casualties have dropped.
