My Go-kart Restoration

this is my go kart that i am restoring. when i finally found it behind my brothers friends shed it was rusted and didn't have a engine and front wheels. then i bought a 6.5 hp engine from harbor freight. polished the wheels and sanded the frame. moved over the platform that holds the engine. painted it. fixed the gas pedal and throttle cable. made a seat. and made a ram air intake. all i need now is new wheels a centrifugal clutch and chain. about a year ago this was very fast with a 3hp engine and now that i have a 6.5 it will be alot faster and stronger. right now i have a 60 tooth sprocket and was wondering if it would be fast enough. should i get get a 40 tooth?

i would put mesh screen over the ends of the ram intake,rocks and sand will get sucked up.

thanks i'll probably do that. and i was wanting to go as fast as i can but still have good acceleration

well a 40 tooth sprocket is pretty small there is a speed calculater here on this site you can use

i finally got it running today and it is pretty fast but accelerates to top speed right away so im going to buy a 40 tooth so i can go faster even though it will take a little more time to accelerate ill put new pics of it now that im done

that ram air=bad ***, so you still use the air filter that cam with the engine? is so then all you need to do iot keeps rocks and olid debris out of it.

at first i wasnt using it but then i opened it and found a bunch of leaves so i put it back on.

lol someone called the cops on me today. i was riding around my neighborhood and then a few minutes after i stopped a cop car started driving around looking for me

that sucks. It's the problem with go karts -- they aren't legal for on road use in most places.

no i'm going to buy new wheels for the back because there lopsided and sat outside for a long time

it sucks for me because i live next to a bunch of old people. they call the cops on me for everything like fireworks, bb guns, airsoft guns, partys and alot of other stuff lol. but the cops dont even care they just tell me its enough for that day lol

when I was a kid, i ticked off a couple of neighbors in the neighborhood, and they would call periodically. Sometimes you can reason with people / apologize and that will help. I suspect most people don't really have a problem with go karts, but they don't like disrespect. Looking back I probably could've figured out a way to make everyone happy, but, hey, I was young. :)

lol bloody cops.. once an un-marked caught me when i was drving my kart.. altough he let me off with a warning. hes was an alright bloke, but he was still a cop lol. but you do need to watch out, he told me that it would be something like $2000 worth fo fines; underage driver, unregistered vehice, distrubing the peace etcc etccc....

2 of my neighbors are cops and one is pretty cool about it and asks me how my projects are goin,but the other one is full of himself and threatens to call the cops when hes off duty lol

LOL! That's funny. I hardly ever see cops in our neighborhood. Unless they're coming directly to my house because my little brother is acting up. Other than that, I think most of my neighbors are pretty cool. There's some people up the street that have some mini bikes that are really loud and I've never seen anyone call about them. I'm gonna try to make my kart as quiet as possible though. I don't want people complaining about it. I don't really care if people are making noise as long as it's at reasonable times. Not like really late at night or really early in the morning.

You're lucky. Where I live, Wife-Beating and Drug Dealing seem to be the norm, but watch a cop when you... DEH-DEH DAAAAAAA!...... Drive a GoKart down the street!

if you want more speed drop your clutch gear to a 14 tooth and your back sprocket to a 64 i run a 12-64 on my racing kart and it gives it alot of speed and power my racing kart runs about 55 mph on a 1\7 mile dirt oval.

hey k racer what rpms are you running at using a governor or not.{im sure not}.and what clutch setup you got.

i use a disk clutch for racing and i'm turning about 6700 rpms the clutch i have has springs on the outside and i can adjust where i want the clutch to come in at which is about 400 rpms on a big track and on smaller tracks i set it to were it comes in right away

yeah, i know what you mean. im good friends with most of my neighbors and the other people in my neck of the woods just know me as that weird kind with the welder XD.

but sadly in my town all the cops and i mean all of them act like a particular lower apendage :roflol:

For the ram air. Do you feel a difference with it off? You can use some of Mommas old panty hose and wrap it around the small end of the scoop with rubber band. That will keep the stuff and and still let air in plus easy removal.
