Go-kart girl recovers after hair sparks emergency
The Hamilton Spectator
(Oct 23, 2006)

A 12-year-old girl is in satisfactory condition in a Rochester hospital after suffering serious scalp and head injuries when her hair became tangled in the drive system of a go-kart last week.

The girl, from Ohio, was airlifted to the Strong Memorial Hospital at the University of Rochester, N.Y., after the accident Friday at Niagara Go-Karts & Mini Putt on Kinsmen Court in Niagara Falls.

The girl, who has long hair, was with her father in a go-kart about 5:20 p.m. According to Niagara police, both were wearing helmets. The girl's hair became loose and got tangled in a drive belt within the engine.

"Nothing like this has ever happened here before," said a man who identified himself as a relative of one of the owners of Niagara Go-Karts. He declined to comment further.

Leigh McNeill, who does go-kart and track maintenance at Hamilton Indoor Go Karts in Hamilton's east end, said riders with long hair are required to tie it back and to wear a hairnet.

"To my knowledge, we've never had an incident involving hair and I've been here two and a half years," McNeill said.

The Technical Standards and Safety Authority, which investigates accidents involving rides and amusement devices, has taken over the investigation from Niagara police.
