How dumb of an idea is it to weld onto a shock? i have a decent rear shock for my sled but the eyelet is broken off. Its an oil shock (i think).

i would do it just dont get it to hot or it will boil the oil just weld a bit then dunk it in water keep doin this till its done. or pull it apart and empty the oil out of it then weld it. post some pics of what your dealling with.

i've never heard of anyone trying or seen any shocks that had been welded. could be a sign. is it a steel or aluminum bodied unit?

Its not a rebuild-able shock, and i cant pull it apart. I wasn't sure what kind of pressure these things were under, didn't want any explosions.

Heres a picture of a similar looking shock (mines a kimpex i think, this is a Ryde FX)

The bottom eyelet is the one thats snapped off (one to the left of the screen).

never weld on to a nitrgion shock as it will explode and most likely kill someone

I don't think this is a nitrogen shock.

yer it would be ok then try not to blow a hole in it lol and keep it cool

Wait yea it is haha, the stock shocks on the sled were oil, the Kimpex that i got is a gas shock. I guess i'll machine something that clamps onto it then.

yep lol wouldent weld on to a gas shock lol just machine a ring clamp with a eyelet on top

if the eye that broke is the one on the shaft, you could use some heat paste. it keeps the heat from transfering and acts as a heat sink. gunsmiths use it when they weld. the one on the shaft would be way safer to weld on imo. do it like tack welding. just don't get it too hot.

No, its not the one on the shaft.

Is JB weld strong enough for this type of thing?

that's a joke right? good one. no. you said the eye on the right, not left

doubt it you could try but i dont think it would hold up

I've never used JB weld, they claim it can hold quite a bit of weight, but i never believed it.

Meant left.

jb is good for repairing fins on air cooled engines, holes in cases, stuff like that. if it is going to move, not worth the material to be used. i have jb'ed a spark plug in before. it held great, but when the plug goes bad, you have to re-jb.

find a piece of pipe itll fit in split both sides and weld a flange on bothe sides of the slits kinda like this just cap one end and weld that eye on
