Curious for anyone that has one: how is the penetration of the weld? i know they say they can do 1/4" (i think that's it) but is that really practical?

I've got one and it works great for me. I've welded 5/16" with nothing wrong, the only problem I've actually had is that it can't weld very thin material.

The penetration is very good.

well when your using the flux core with the thin material it does burn through easily is that the kind your talking about our are u using gas:o

yes, i run gas, but in the 220 class mig. without gas that makes sense, since the atmosphere would be burning the material easier without the shield.
