So i bent my axle. I need a new 25mm one. I figure it will be cheaper to get a piece of 25mm rod and get the keyways machined in. What material is best? I like the idea of an aluminium axle, how would that go?

4140 steel is pretty much the strongest, you can get it from Bohler or Atlas steels. It's pretty expensive but you'll never bend it! Other wise, normal steel should be fine, it's just not as strong though.

From memory someone on another forum said they bought a 1.2m length for $70. Other than that I don't know, I couldn't find anything on the above mentioned companies websites.

its best to use that mateial (4140 steel), aluminium would not have the same strenght and it will wear away quickly, and it is also more expensive
