just got a free 5 horse briggs fun power go kart motor. and whowee! its gonna be a fun build. im taking it down to bare block and starting from there. it wasnt running when i got it, but it will be when im done here. there is some stuff that will need to be replaced (the flywheel. yucky rust!, might just soak in clr or something insted). once i get it running with stock parts, im going to then work on performance stuff. if i can get this fast enough im just going to use this insted of a dirt bike motor. the only things left in the block is the piston, crank and valves. i dont have the carb off yet cuz it has torx bolts... which i have no torx drivers(that i can find).

so what do yall think? i think its worth working on. do you?

That doesnt look bad at all, how much compression does it have? Put in a carb kit if you cant get it running, as for the fly wheel, just sand the magnet part down and it should work, i did that for a motor i found in snow bank in the spring.

i dont know about compression yet, looks good but i had my thumb over the exhaust port and heard hissing wen i rotated it. and with my thumb over the spark plug hole. it needs gaskets too. carb looks good at the moment. gonna soak it in parts cleaner/carb cleaner. i need to wash everything too. its dirtyyyy. they diddnt change the oil at all. i bet that was why it diddnt run.

hell its a free motor... only replacement parts im getting is gaskets... untill i start to order my performance parts.

im soooo close to cleaning it BUT! i cant get the flywheel off... :(

well i got the flywheel off! i wasnt hittin it hard enough! lol so its finally down to bare block! store closed so i couldent get any parts washer... i had NOTHING here lol so im going to the store 2marro to get some. and some hemi orange paint! yes thats right, im painting the block and the sheet metal blower/cover either high gloss black or orange too. wat do you guys think?

looks good, exhaust sould work fine. go with the orange if its a unique color of orange, theres orange engines out there but all the same orange. maybe make the cover black?

i was talking to m y metro friend (he isnt gay, he is metro!), who does paint and body work on cars and he was thinking like a HEMI orange, and a flat black engine cover. what do you think?

im kinda lazy to go to the store, can i jus wash everything with simple green and water?

i dont know what simple green is but water and metal dont mix, especcaly in motor, the paint you described would look absoutly aoesome.

well i used 1 can of gunk, 1 can of brake cleaner, 1 bottle of simple green and some good ol elbow grease and it turned out nice!

i did use water, but i put some oil around any metal to metal internals that might rust so im all good.

oh and i decided on the orange with flat black

:D it turned out perfect, although its not done you get the idea of how its gonna look. all i need is a gasket set for it and it'll be complete. oh and i forgot what the timing mark on it is! so i need to figer that out, i thought i did 1 time but the counterweight would hit the cam lobes, then i thought i did again but the end of the rod hit the camshaft. i need to get it right. oh and does anyone know the torque specs for these parts? (rod head, any bolts on it :p)

i never use torque specs, i tighten as hard as i can without stripping, are you going to put a bigger cam in while its all apart? you sould reseat the valves while its apart too, itll give you much more compression, that way when and if you need to rebuild it you know its the rigs or the piston.

right now im just gonna try to get it started, if it runs then im gonna get stuff for it.

im having a rod bearing problem, i think its on backwards. need to figer it out. ordering gaskets and k&n air filter kit for it now.

:( the freakin pull start broke. and the compression sounds bad( it did before though too). the carb dosent seem to be pulling any gas either. im goin out to dinner now but will try to fix when i get back.

the spring or the rope? The compression is leading to the carb not working, the compression pulls fuel in.

i think i figered it out!. my cam is "backwards" air seems to be pulling in through my exhaust and out of my intake! and the carb is dee dee dee. i think i might just use my drill to start it and take the pull start off. i tried it and it will start it with my drill, but once it starts im gonna be afraid of wats gonna happen to me holdin the drill. the whole pull start broke. one of the white things snaped off, well the little pin that holds it in place did.

does anyone know what are the timing marks and where they need to be lined up on a briggs raptor/funpower motor? i tried a few positions that i thought worked. and it diddnt. but the 1 that did the strokes are backwards (well their not just the air is going the wrong way)

OK! I GOT IT ALL FIXED FINALLY AND WORKING!

sorta. i got the most 2 pops out of it before it died. it wants to start, i pull the starter rope and i hear 1-2 pops (the motor running not the starter dying) out of it, then dies. the carb was a bit flooded, i hope that was the problem. going to check now again

i just rebuilt an engine(not as extensivly as you) but i ported and polished the intake and exhaust ports and i still havent got it running cus i used an old tillotson at first but it isnt working and there isnt enough room in the minibike frame to use the stock carb and gas tank...i guess ill just have to cut the frame..

ok, i need a new diaphragm in the carb (i think) so im pickin up a old carb (same one jus off another motor, same motor too... next project, then 200cc dirt bike motor!) and either using that carb or taking the diaph. out and using it.

you could have just bought a carb kit for 5 or 6 bucks and know it would be good.

idk where to get one close by and idk what carb it is. and the choke is held open by a spring, the other carb has the little locking tabs, and the throttle stop (metal piece that stops it at WOT) is broke off.

:( i got the new old carb today. not much improvement. i for a few more pops out of the motor but thats it. when i take the spark plug off to check for any gas. its dry and the inside of the combustion chamber is wet not alot but enough to start it looks like. i fixed the spring. the diaphragm is not broken. im pretty sure its getting gas but i dont know why its not starting. im starting to give up. i might just get a new carb. what gas carb can i get for that that will work when i mod it too?
this is my first un startable motor ever :(

i think im gonna jus get a new carb. my dad thinks the timing marks are off but they are correct (checked it 4 times), its the carb thats messed up. i think. i hope that it cuz i needed a new 1 anyway
