Like most people, I'm looking for more speed. I've got a 18hp honda 4 cycle that I love on my rally kart, but I want something stronger for the road. so. I'm looking on ebay for a decent deal on a new 2 stroke motor with at least a 4 speed trans. I want to be somewhere from 125 to 150cc. The motors on ebay all say 4 stroke, but they are still small pit bike engines. Am I just not looking hard enough? Where should I look to get a good powerful 2 stroke? what if I use a 150cc 4 stroke with gears, would this be preffered to a similar displacement 2 stroke? Thanks guys.

For a road kart you really cant beat the power of a liquid cooled 2 stroke such as an RM, CR, YZ, or KX 125. Search craigslist and ebay, but trust me you wont find a new one cheap.

it's really not necessary to get a new engine. as long as it's been taken care of, a 10 year old or newer motocross bike engine will work fine. but even used, these engines aren't cheap. taking a working engine from a crashed bike and selling the other parts would probably be the cheapest

Alright, I'll see what I can find. Last night I found a real old honda nighthawk 250 for 500 dollars in my area. Its about 20 horses and 5 up gearing. Still runs great apparently. How would this compare to a 125? Price and performance wise...

Performance wise, that 250 looks to have around the same power as a new-ish 125 bike, but it probably has much more torque. Not sure about prices other than to be on the lookout for a bike damaged beyond repair.

If you can find a damaged bike then it should be much much cheaper. e.g it cost me $1000 for a 2007 500cc Suzuki twin with ~9,500km's. I'll make all that back selling the parts.

This is what mine looked like:

*EDIT* this bike owes me $400 as of 18.11.09

*EDIT* now owes me $350 as of 24.11.09

I found a guy yesterday riding a kx125 around this abandoned building we were painting in. Maybe we could've gotten him to crash his dirt bike, then sell us the motor? 8]

Less horsepower, more low end torque, heavier. probably not worth $500

I found an old 250 2 stroke that he's gonna take $80 for. I'll need to put it back together.

I've already started trollin pawn shops in my area, I think I'll go find a dirtbike shop and ask them what they have that doesn't run. I can fix a motor I just dont have money.
