So i am new to this stuff. i am currently attending SUNY Oswego and i am in a transportation class where we r rebuilding engines. I have a 16 hp Briggs opposed twin cylinder 656cc. I dont have any pics of it on my computer yet but it currently isnt working and was wondering how it would fair on a go kart after the rebuild.
Thanks,
Zach

I got an 18 twin that should be going in my racing mower in progress at some point, and a horizontal 16 twin in my riding mower that i use to grass board and whatnot.
Oh and my kart has a 400cc inline twin engine, 36hp stock.

We should make a performance guide for our bigger engines; What do you guys think?
freakboy
11-08-2009, 07:28 AM
Sure we could.
Rotore
11-08-2009, 08:31 AM
could be useful for us?

lets start with RPM limits!!!!
4000 is the TOP!
they could use better valve springs
internals are strong as is,
watch your head gaskets as they tend to blow under heavy load/age
they are strong and even governed at 3200 kill anything else.
keep the tin and shrouding on it to keep the block cool
they love to run, but with one goofed spark plug it will run like hell
carb adjustments are key! one carb feeding to jugs is sensetive, running lean can be risky

Quick question though lol can my 25hp push a 4:1 gear ratio on a 15 inch tire

11,000 rpm for this twin :P apparently with stronger valve springs you can get it to 13k rpm, but power drops off after about 9,500 so I don't see the point. Also my tacho only goes to 10,000...

well your missing 2 strokes in ur engine sooooo, rpm vs torque! either is ok!

Yup my twin will do around 10k when tuned right (horrible carbs right now), and the tach goes to 11k. Makes peak power at 8.5k and will spin the tires right off.

what is the bore on your engine
modelengineer
11-08-2009, 02:07 PM
Bore 74mm, stroke 56.6mm. 9.0:1 compression (don't know if that was directed at me, but I felt like looking it up anyway. It's way over square.)
Interested to hear what yours is Kaptain. Internet high five for motorbike twins!?
*high five*
BriggsTwins
11-08-2009, 02:10 PM
oh either, 2.913 inches is actually small, but powerful at 8.5K
my 18 twin is 3.5xx inches, with more displacement than my dad''s bike

lol thats sick dude.
YOOOOOO i found a way to hook up a automotive tach to our engines on heymow.
,The tach should have 4 wires. Red, Black, White, and Green. Red goes to POS. Black to ground, White to a light switch. Green to the coil wire."
BriggsTwins
11-08-2009, 03:02 PM
yes but the issue stands, 4 cylinder, to two, if i had one i would experiment using a resistor, or something to slow the signal and make it work
Rotore
11-08-2009, 03:05 PM
it"ll work its just that the readings would be wrong the tach would say 9000rpm when your only at 3600rpm. Btw there was a guy on youtube that made it work ill se if i can find it.
also that chooper was using a torque converter off a sled on my same exact engine too.

Well on a twin bike engine, a 4 cylinder car tacho will read perfectly from what I've heard. I'll be able to confirm in a few weeks.
