how exactly do they work and hwat all do u have to hook up

Thay change the gearing from low to high.

They can go attached directly to the engine and they have a belt that goes from the engine pulley to the drive pulley. The size of the pulleys changes as the engine speeds up.

would it e possilbe to run one with a longer belt?

Why, you have to use a jack shaft anyway. So there is no need for a long belt.
